Guitar indie-pop band Pale Waves and Mercury-nominated The Big Moon are the latest acts heading to the south Devon countryside for the county’s biggest music event this summer.

The bands are joining the line-up for seven-time GRAMMY Award winning Canadian / American artist Alanis Morissette ’s headline show with special guest musical powerhouse Skunk Anansie at TK Maxx presents Live At Powderham on Friday June 26.

Generations unite as Devon fundraiser prepares for 50th walk

Schoolchildren and great-grandparents alike will take part in the 50th Newton Abbot walk for Christian Aid Week when a special Sydney Williams’ Memorial Walk is held on May 20th.

The walk, which has raised over £367,000 over the decades to tackle poverty around the world, was set up by the late Sydney Williams and taking part in this year’s event at Newton Abbot Racecourse will be his widow Dorothy Williams (90), their four children and a grandchild alongside generations of other Devon families.

Rural skip service to reach 35 towns and villages

Coastal Recycling and Teignbridge Council are set to bring a Rural Skip Service to rural towns and villages across the district until February 2018.

The ‘pop up recycling facility’ will give residents without access to a permanent recycling centre the chance to easily recycle certain materials and items locally, from bulky household waste to scrap metal and wood.

Experts Coastal Recycling will set up temporary collection containers on Saturdays offering a one-day recycling service at 35 sites from Shaldon to Widecombe in the Moor.

Exmouth car park closed for expansion works

East Devon District Council will be closing its Camperdown Terrace car park in Exmouth from Monday 15 May to Friday 26 May in order to carry out works to expand the existing pay and display car park into the adjacent former Devon County Council highways maintenance depot.

The expansion works will increase the number of existing parking spaces from 39 to a total of 112 spaces.

Homeless eye clinic opens in Exeter

A new eye clinic for homeless people has opened in Exeter.

The clinic, which is led by a team of volunteers, is located at Clock Tower Surgery in Wat Tyler House which brings together some 25 services for homeless and vulnerable people.

Set up by the charity, Vision Care for Homeless People, it has been made possible by support from the Local Optical Committee, a team of volunteer optometrists, donations from Specsavers and Bills Opticians which will provide the glazing of spectacles. The 122nd Devon County Show will take place shortly at Westpoint, Exeter on May 18, 19 and 20.

More than 90,000 visitors are expected to see some of the best livestock, taste fabulous local food and drink, experience country life and enjoy a wealth of entertainment.

To celebrate the first anniversary of The Room Works, a kitchen and bathroom showroom on Alphinbrook Road, Exeter City FC and the Exeter Chiefs battled it out during a charity bake-off on Thursday 4th May and, following a highly competitive showdown, City were crowned the baking champions.

Following the players’ first head to head at a cook-off to celebrate the launch of the showroom in May 2016 – which was deemed a draw – the players once again came together with both teams determined to outdo the other.
