The Alzheimer’s Society is encouraging local people in Exeter to unite against dementia and become a Dementia Friends Champion this month. People can book now to attend a touring induction day that is coming to Exeter on Wednesday 28 June 2017.

The day-long session is part of Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Friends programme, which is the biggest ever initiative to change people’s perceptions of dementia. It aims to transform the way the nation acts, thinks and talks about the condition.

Dementia Friends Champions are volunteers who help tackle the stigma and lack of understanding that means many people with the condition experience loneliness and social exclusion. After attending the Exeter induction day, the volunteers will deliver Dementia Friends sessions across the local area in the coming months.

There are more than 1.9 million Dementia Friends in England and Wales. Alzheimer’s Society want to reach even more people so that people with dementia feel understood and included in their community.

Camilla Alfred, Dementia Friends Officer at Alzheimer’s Society said: “Dementia doesn’t care who you are; it could affect us all. It’s set to be the 21st century’s biggest killer, with someone developing it every three minutes, and so many people are facing it alone.

“People with dementia often feel – and are – misunderstood, marginalised and isolated but with the right support and understanding they can continue to live fulfilling lives and make a contribution to their communities. So, unite with us now and join us on 28 June.”
