In July EX2 Group was proud to support Building Greater Exeter’s Work Experience Week, an inspiring initiative aimed at introducing Year 10 students to careers in the built environment.

Wheelchair basketball booming in Exeter thanks to inspirational coach and player

Dozens of wheelchair basketball players are beating a path to an Exeter sports centre to take up a sport which is booming in Devon’s capital city.

And that’s partly thanks to the inspiration of ex-professional player and coach Jack Davey, who’s made Wonford Sports Centre in Exeter his second home.

The enthusiastic 29-year-old has 50 members attending training sessions for Exeter Otters, the UK’s oldest wheelchair basketball club (founded in 1980).

Creative thinkers in and around Exeter are being invited to “put their own stamp on the city’s future history” as part of a What’s in a Name? competition – and be in with a chance of winning a cash prize.

Football pitches to be created in Exeter for the grassroots game

Grassroots football in Exeter is set to receive a boost with the announcement that three football pitches are to be created.

A baseball pitch will also be laid out at the Bromham’s Farm Field site as part of the project. The site is owned by Exeter City Council.

Work will start in April and it is hoped that the playing surfaces should be ready for action in 2026. The project is being funded by the Environment Agency, who used the location as a site compound for the city’s flood defence scheme.

Exeter students have been celebrating World Book Day this week (7th March.)

World Book Day was created by UNESCO in 1995 as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, it is marked in over 100 countries. The World Book Day charity’s Strategy 2023-27 sets out that its aim is “more children, from all backgrounds, developing a life-long habit of reading for pleasure, benefiting from the improved life chances this brings them.”

Proceeds of Crime funding for good causes grows in Devon ​

Devon & Cornwall Police has dished out plenty of important funding towards good causes in the community since last year.

The funds have been collected as part of the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA) which allows police forces to re-allocate money from cash and assets which have been seized and confiscated from convicted criminals.

Around £20,000 has been allocated to local groups in North, East and West Devon, as well as Exeter, during the financial year 2023/24.

Sandford orchads wins funding to lead apple tree research

Award-winning cider maker, Sandford Orchards, has partnered with scientists from Bristol University to identify and preserve ancient apple varieties across the UK. Following on from a compelling small scale trial, Sandford Orchards has just tendered for and won a competitive bid to receive a grant from DEFRA to expand this research and they are now leading the way nationally, including heading up a project at RHS Rosemoor.

Magic Carpet to become part of Exeter Community Initiatives

Magic Carpet, an Exeter-based charity that runs weekly art and drama groups for adults with learning disabilities and mental health difficulties, is to become part of Exeter Community Initiatives (ECI).

The move will benefit both charities allowing them to share resources and save costs.

The announcement of a major new employer locating to the Gravity smart campus in Somerset has been heralded as a key opportunity for the region.

Agratas, Tata Group’s global battery business, has been confirmed as the operator of the UK’s new battery gigafactory on the Gravity campus close to junction 23 of the M5 near Bridgwater in Somerset.

An innovative scheme which employs prisoners to construct environmentally-friendly housing has been described as a ‘game-changer’ by a former inmate and a ‘triple win’ by Justice Secretary Alex Chalk.

A major Exeter-based developer is working towards bringing new homes to the city.

Persimmon Homes South West secured outline planning consent for up to 50 high-quality homes, 35% of which will be designated for a local housing association, in line with Exeter City Council policy, on land adjacent to Blakeslee Drive in Newcourt.
