Putting people first in Exeter and Devon – time to have your say

Engagement is underway on the city council’s proposals for the future reorganisation of local government in Devon.

Councillors backed proposals for the geography for a potential new unitary authority which includes the city of Exeter and surrounding areas at an Extraordinary Council meeting.

The city council is proposing:

  • An urban unitary council for Exeter and the surrounding areas
  • An urban unitary council for Plymouth and adjacent Parishes
  • A rural and coastal unitary council for the remainder of Devon

Devon celebrates in style

Devon County Show opened its gates on the first day to huge crowds who flocked to enjoy the very best that the county has to offer.

HRH The Countess of Wessex, President of the Devon County Agricultural Association which runs the Show, spent a busy day presenting awards, watching events and demonstrations by sheep shearers and blacksmiths as well as meeting many of the Show’s army of volunteers.

Car targeted by vandals in Exmouth

Police are appealing for information after an Exmouth man’s vehicle was damaged by vandals.

The black VW Jetta was targeted by three men around 10.55pm on Saturday 29 April in Cleveland Place, Exmouth.

The roof of the vehicle was dented causing approximately £4000 worth of damage.

After the incident, the men walked through the alleyway next to Garners Home Hardware and onto The Strand.

Police are investigating and seeking the suspects, the main offender was described as white, 25 to 30 years old, between 5ft 9ins and 6ft tall, of stocky build, wearing jeans...

A group of students aged 11-13 and their families from Cranbrook Educational Campus have taken part in a ‘ready, steady, cook!’ style series of healthy cooking sessions provided by Axminster charity HALFF (Health and Local Food for Families).

Funded by East Devon District Council via NHS England’s healthy new towns programme, ‘Cranbake’ gave students and families a chance to cook a variety of meals together as part of a four week course.

Warning issued after road signs placed on railway tracks

Officers from British Transport Police are issuing a warning after road signs were placed on the tracks and then struck by a train.

The incident happened at approximately 6.15am on Monday 15 May as the 5.50am Great Western Railway service between Exeter St Davids and Barnstaple was passing through Yeoford.

As the train went around a bend, the driver noticed the signs on the tracks but was unable to stop in time. The train struck the road signs. It is believed the signs were placed on the tracks between 1.30am and 6.15am the same morning.

Residents' views on parking scheme wanted

Devon County Council is asking householders in the Rosebarn Lane area of Exeter if they want a resident's parking scheme.

Some residents in the area have contacted the council and said that they are finding it difficult to park near their homes.

The consultation, which runs from Friday 19 May until Wednesday 7 June, follows a petition submitted by residents to the council at the Exeter Highways and Traffic Orders Committee (HATOC) on 14 November 2016.

A farmer who has built up a thriving dairy farm from nothing, overcoming many challenges along the way, has been named Devon’s Farmer of the Year at the Devon Farm Business Awards. This tenacity and perseverance is echoed in several other winners, including a single mother who runs her tenanted farm by herself and a beef and sheep farmer who stepped up to help her dairy farming friends by persuading her local supermarket to stock pints of milk alongside fizzy drinks.

Handbag taken from property in Exeter

Police are appealing for witnesses after belongings and cash were taken during a burglary at a residential property on the Killerton Estate, in the Hele area of Exeter.

Offenders entered the home through an insecure window sometime between 2pm and 2.45pm on Thursday 11 May, while the resident was out.

The offender managed to escape having taken a handbag containing cash and cards from the kitchen table.

Residents in the area are asked to remain vigilant and to remember to keep their property secure, including keeping windows closed when they are out.

Devon Air Ambulance Trust Former Chair, Anita Newcombe, along with her husband Richard, will undertake an intrepid trek to Everest Base Camp to raise funds for Devon Air Ambulance’s new Night Flying Programme.

Anita had been a trustee of DAAT for the last 6 years, Chair of the Board of Trustees for the last 4 years and completed her tenure in May 2017.
