When people think about dementia, they often think about memory loss, diagnosis, or the practical aspects of care.

What is spoken about far less is the emotional toll of trying to navigate support systems, whilst also coping with the reality of someone you care about living with dementia.

Political leaders unite to demand better funding for Devon

Devon’s political leaders are uniting to call on the Government for fairer funding for the county’s elderly and vulnerable.

They have come together to write to MPs to demand fairer funding for children’s services and adult social care.

They say the number of child protection investigations has doubled in the past 10 years while demand for social care for vulnerable adults is rising relentlessly – particularly in Devon with its large elderly population.

But, say the leaders, there has been no complementary increase in funding.

Council to undertake annual cliff inspections across district

Detailed inspections will be carried out week commencing 19 February at Budleigh Salterton, Beer East Beach, Sidmouth Connaught Gardens and Seaton West Walk

Detailed inspections of the cliffs at Seaton, Beer, Sidmouth and Budleigh Salterton are due to be carried out by East Devon District Council between 19 February and 27 February 2018 – weather depending.

The annual cliff inspections are undertaken to ensure the continued safety of the public using facilities situated beneath the cliffs, such as walkways, beach huts and other assets.

Police warning after spate of catalytic converter thefts

Police have issued a warning to members of the public to be vigilant following a series of thefts of catalytic convertors from motor vehicles in Torquay, Newton Abbot and Totnes.

Between Saturday 3 February and Monday 5 February 2018, there were three catalytic converter thefts in Devon.

The converters were stolen whilst vehicles were parked on the street outside the owner’s homes and also from vehicles parked on industrial estates. The vehicles being targeted are mainly Honda Accords.

Police appeal following assault in Exwick

Police are investigating an assault in Exwick which is believed to have had a number of witnesses.

At around 11pm on Tuesday 30 January, an altercation took place outside Kinnerton Court, Kinnerton Way, Exwick, Exeter between two men and a woman.

A local man in his 40’s sustained a broken leg and bruising to his face during the incident.

Police arrested a man and a woman, both aged 35 on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm. Both have since been released under investigation pending further enquiries.

The latest research by SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, has found that more than two in five (41%) veterans aged 25-45 have felt lonely, isolated, or suicidal since leaving the Armed Forces. With one in five (22%) veterans stating that they would feel less lonely if they had a stronger support group. A classic boost for cancer support in Devon

The 2017 Classics Galore! concert - Exeter’s very own night at the proms - raised a record sum of £21,000 for FORCE Cancer Charity.

To celebrate, sponsors, performers, organisers and representatives from the charity gathered at the FORCE Support and Information Centre for the cheque presentation.

Classics Galore! has been staged at the University of Exeter Great Hall every two years since 2007.

Profits from the tenth anniversary of this hugely popular musical extravaganza take the total raised for FORCE to nearly £90,000.

PEOPLE in the South West are being urged to sign up to Swimathon, the world’s biggest annual fundraising swim, to raise money for two great causes, Cancer Research UK and Marie Curie. Swimmers of all ages and abilities are being invited to take part in the annual sponsored event in pools across the region and help raise money for both charities.
