Exeter Racecourse has launched a brand-new Community Raceday and is inviting people across Devon to nominate a community hero who deserves recognition.

Community Raceday takes place on Friday, February 20, during half term, and coincides with Devon Day at the racecourse. The initiative celebrates the people who make a real difference in their communities – from volunteers and carers to sports coaches, fundraisers and quiet grafters who go above and beyond.

Exeter research lab opens doors to Cornish boy with diabetes

A research lab at Exeter Medical School opened its doors to an 11-year-old boy who has Type 1 diabetes so that he could learn about groundbreaking research into his condition. Daniel Lindley and his mum Karen from Lostwithiel in Cornwall joined a tour of the Islet Cell Biology lab to meet Professor Noel Morgan and other diabetes researchers who are funded by Diabetes UK. The visitors learnt how Professor Morgan and his team have access to a rare set of pancreas samples, taken from people who had been recently diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Station Road in Exeter to close for 9 weeks during flood defence work

The construction of the Exeter flood defence scheme is now well advanced with completion of the whole scheme expected at the end of 2018.

The scheme is a partnership between the Environment Agency, Devon County Council and Exeter City Council.

The flood defences will reduce the risk of flooding to more than 3,200 homes and businesses in Exeter.

As part of the new defences being built in the north of the city it will be necessary to close Station Road from 9 April 2018 for nine weeks.

Appeal for information after train guard assaulted

British Transport Police are appealing for information after a train guard was assaulted on a train between Newcourt and Digby and Sowton.

At around 3.40pm on Monday (19 February), four teenagers became abusive towards their train guard when he asked to see the tickets.

The group – made up of three girls and one boy – all spat at him, which landed on his face and uniform.

Though uninjured, it left the guard extremely shaken.

Exeter Community Energy (ECOE) is backing national Fuel Poverty Awareness Day on Friday 23 February – as figures show that more 6,000 people in the area are struggling with their fuel bills.

The day marks the end of the Warm Homes Campaign, run by fuel poverty charity National Energy Action (NEA), which aims to raise awareness of the problem and some of the solutions available for those struggling to heat their homes affordably.

RD&E Maternity services rated highly by local mums

Maternity services at the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust have been rated highly by mums in the 2017 National Maternity Survey. The Trust performed well across the survey, and has been rated as one of the top performing nationally.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) survey asked women about their experience of antenatal care, care during labour and birth, and postnatal care. It was sent to more than 18,000 women who gave birth in February 2017 in services run by 130 NHS trusts across the country.

Grey squirrels beat reds in ‘battle of wits’

Problem-solving powers may help to explain why grey squirrels have taken over from native red squirrels in the UK, new research says.

The study tested wild squirrels with an “easy” task (opening a transparent lid) and a “difficult” task (a more complex process of pushing and pulling levers) to get hazelnuts.

The two species were equally successful at the easy task, but a more of the grey squirrels cracked the difficult one.

Newton Abbot based construction company, Randall Simmonds, have pledged a monthly donation to YMCA Exeter in support of their expanding service provision in the county.

YMCA Exeter provide services in Supported Accommodation, Employment and Health & Wellbeing, for young people who are experiencing homelessness.
