Rising stars shine in first year of relaunched women’s football pathway partnership

Exeter College and Exeter City FC Women are celebrating a successful first year since relaunching their Academy partnership, which is helping young women and girls across the South West combine elite football with exceptional education.

Relaunched in April 2025 to strengthen the pathway for talented female footballers, the renewed collaboration has already delivered success on the pitch and supported players to progress into senior football and gain international honours.

Dartmoor Rangers are launching a new campaign asking people to Love Moor Life and follow their new ‘Ranger Code’.

The new Ranger Code asks visitors to the National Park to follow six simple steps to help them look after this special landscape and protect the wildlife and livestock that live on Dartmoor.

As an extra incentive, there is the added bonus that if they spot people following the code while enjoying the National Park, there could be an on-the-spot reward!

The organ installed to celebrate Buckfast Abbey’s millennium will be the centrepiece of a special evening concert by Exeter Philharmonic Choir on Saturday May 19th, the night of the Royal Wedding.

Summer in the Abbey - An evening of French and English music features works by a variety of composers from both sides of the Channel, including Vaughan Williams’ ethereal and haunting Valiant for Truth and Fauré’s ever popular Cantique de Jean Racine.

Devon-based lifestyle blogger Clara George, 22, has won the online vote of a prestigious regional beauty contest; giving her two chances to reach the nationwide Miss England pageant.

With no contest in the Devon region this year, all local contestants like Clara were entered into the Miss Bristol competition. Clara came first in the phone vote with 644 votes, ahead of her nearest competitor who received 514. As a result, she now holds the title of Miss Bristol Popularity and will go on to compete in the Miss Popularity Final as well as the Miss England Semi-Final.

Summer Sunday trains to and from Okehampton will return later this month.

The Great Western Railway (GWR) service, funded by Devon County Council, will run four trains each way between Okehampton and Exeter every Sunday, from Sunday 20 May to Sunday 9 September.

The service, which launched in 1997, is part of the ongoing efforts to re-introduce regular services on the line.

Road users are being encouraged to plan their journeys into and around Exeter on Thursday 10 May when the new IKEA store opens to the public.

Increased traffic volumes are anticipated on the major routes into the city, especially on the M5 at Junction 30 Sandygate roundabout and the A379 leading to the new store. Additional traffic may potentially lead to disruption and longer than average delays in the area surrounding the new store.

£250,000 funding boost to investigate whether vitamin D promotes brain health

A robust clinical trial to investigate whether taking vitamin D can help keep our brains sharp in older age has been supported by a donation of nearly £250,000 from the J P Moulton Charitable Foundation.

The University of Exeter Medical School will conduct a three-year study on whether vitamin D can improve brain health in people at risk of dementia. Using the PROTECT online study of people aged 50 and over, the trial will assess whether supplements could help to prevent decline in memory and other cognitive functions.

Research that revealed the devastating impact that microplastic pollution could have on the health of humans and wildlife has won a Guardian University Award.

A sickly African penguin chick has been nursed back to health with fish soup by dedicated zoo keepers.

Staff at Living Coasts, Torquay’s coastal zoo and aquarium, have been feeding the chick every 3 hours from 7.30 in the morning to 7.30 at night. The only thing on the menu is fish; at first this was blended into a liquid soup, but the chick has now moved on to solids.
