Gandy Street is the place to be on the First Thursdays of the month this summer

First Thursdays is a new event you won’t want to miss.

From June to September, Gandy Street will come alive on the first Thursday of each month, with a festival atmosphere in the early evening.

The first event takes place on Thursday 4 June, 5–8pm. Expect late-night shopping, live music, street entertainment, extended opening hours at cultural venues and a cocktail trail. All your favourite businesses on Gandy Street and in the surrounding area will be open, including:

People in Devon are being invited to step out with the Ramblers for their Walk About festival this summer and uncover the hidden gems on their doorstep. The nationwide festival, supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery, takes place from 26 May to 3 June with hundreds of free group walks on offer across the Britain. For the first time ever, a cluster of tourist destinations in Devon have developed British Sign Language videos (BSL), enabling the Deaf community to have meaningful and engaging experiences with their heritage like never before.

Just in time for Deaf Awareness Week, Seaton Wetlands, Seaton Jurassic, Kents Cavern and National Trust Killerton are the four Devon locations that have so far created the videos in partnership with Heritage Ability.

Valuable jewellery stolen in Exeter burglary

Police are appealing for information after an elderly woman’s home was burgled on Monday 7 May 2018.

The incident happened at a property on Grendon Road in Exeter between 11.30am and 3.30pm.

During the burglary, a sentimental 18ct gold ring was stolen that had recently been valued at £1600 [photograph attached]. The ring is a pale blue sapphire ring which is set in a four claw, double gallery setting and mounted on a knife edge shank. The emerald cut, pale blue sapphire measures (L) 11.5mm x (W) 8mm x (D) 6.55mm. Total weight was 6.6 grams. The ring size is N ½.

The British Horse Society (BHS) has released figures highlighting a rise in incidents between horses and vehicles in Devon.

Between the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 years, incidents in Devon rose from 7 to 17, the highest figure in the South West. These incidents refer to collisions between vehicles and horses, as well as near-misses, that have resulted in death, injury or distress to riders or their horses.

There are 1.3 million regular riders in the UK, and in total 230 horses and 39 riders have been killed since 2010.

Overnight closures planned on Cumberland Way in Exeter

Overnight closures will be needed on Cumberland Way next week as work continues on the new cycle route.

The road will be closed between 6:30pm and 6am each evening from Monday 21 May to Friday 25 May to enable the road to be resurfaced, traffic counters to be installed and road markings to be painted.

Cumberland Way will be closed between Pinhoe Road / Main Road / Cumberland Way junction (to the north) and the Tithebarn Way roundabout (to the south).

Council to consider plans for extra tree inspections

Additional tree inspections are being recommended to be carried out in Devon in order to manage the risk of Ash dieback.

A report going before Devon County Council’s Cabinet next week (Wednesday 16 May) is asking councillors to consider increasing the frequency of inspections, initially to every two years and potentially every year. This would reduce the risk of falling trees and branches in order to protect public safety.

Ash trees account for around 20% of all trees in Devon, and virtually all native Ash trees are expected to succumb to Ash dieback.
