Exeter Racecourse has launched a brand-new Community Raceday and is inviting people across Devon to nominate a community hero who deserves recognition.

Community Raceday takes place on Friday, February 20, during half term, and coincides with Devon Day at the racecourse. The initiative celebrates the people who make a real difference in their communities – from volunteers and carers to sports coaches, fundraisers and quiet grafters who go above and beyond.

CDS expands broadband network to thousands more homes and businesses

Nearly 300,000 homes and businesses in rural areas now have access to superfast broadband thanks to Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS).

New analysis shows the total number of homes and businesses with access to CDS-provided superfast has risen to 298,900 and a further 38,000 can access improved broadband speeds.

In addition, CDS-funded construction has started to provide a further 68,100 rural homes and businesses across the region with access to superfast networks by 2020. In many cases the new networks will be capable of ultrafast speeds. (See Notes)

Trolley Shop profits buy equipment for RD&E wards

Patients across the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital are benefitting from new pieces of equipment thanks to a £4,000 donation from the Trolley Shop.

The not-for-profit enterprise is run completely by volunteers and offers patients a range of refreshments, toiletries and stationery during its daily ward rounds. Any proceeds made by the Trolley Shop are put into a fund, and once a year, every ward in the hospital is given the opportunity to apply for support from it. The Trolley Shop Volunteers Committee then decides how the money will be distributed.

1 in 6 not registered to vote in South West

The Electoral Commission estimates that 16% of people are not registered to vote in the South West, as Exeter and Plymouth get set to go to the polls on 3 May.

The Commission’s brand new campaign “Got 5?” is encouraging people across the South West to register online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote before the 17 April deadline if they have local elections in their area.

It’s estimated between 540,000 and 689,000 aren’t registered to vote in the region.

CCTV appeal after assault at Totnes station

Do you know who this man is? Officers would like to speak with him in connection to an assault at Totnes station last month.

At approximately 11.45pm to 11.50pm on 11 February, the victim – a 65-year-old man - had just left a train. He had a verbal altercation with another man who left the service.

The offender then approached the victim and assaulted him by punching him and kicking him multiple times. He received cuts and bruises following the assault.
