Eddie’s remarkable return to Devon 87 years on

Topsham Museum recently welcomed a remarkable visitor - 93 year old Eddie Childs who, as a six year old boy, had been evacuated to the town at the start of World War Two in 1939.

He and his family, who now live in Essex, retraced those steps and revisited Topsham, and in particular its most famous street - Strand - where young Eddie was billeted in two houses over two years.

Although the Museum is currently closed for long-term repairs by Exeter City Council, volunteers reopened part of it as a surprise for Eddie to share reminiscences about his time in the town....

Newcourt Community Centre has been awarded £2,000 by one of the South West’s most prominent housebuilders.

Exeter-based Persimmon Homes donated the funds as part of its Community Champions programme which seeks to reward good causes and much-valued organisations in the areas in which it builds.

90% of Plymouth retailers were found to be compliant with sales of age-restricted products as part of an operation that took place last week.

On Monday 8 June, Devon & Cornwall Police’s Child-Centred Policing Team and Plymouth Police Cadets worked with The Heart of the South West Trading Standards to conduct a test purchase operation in the city centre.

This year’s Learning Disability Week (15 to 21 June) asks “Do you see me?” and is all about ensuring people with a learning disability are seen, heard and valued. This aim is shared by Devon County Council’s Reaching for Independence team which offers short-term enabling support to people aged 17 years and upwards with eligible social care needs or likely to have them.

New paddling pools work to start in Heavitree soon

Work to create new paddling pools in Heavitree is to begin shortly after ageing infrastructure forced the current pools to close for the summer, the City Council has revealed.
