This is the extraordinary moment the hatching of a rare Mauritius pink pigeon chick was caught on video – and the moment the hard work started in earnest for Paignton Zoo bird keeper Tom Tooley.

Senior Bird Keeper Tom is currently 6,000 miles away on the island of Mauritius. But if you think he’s dodged the English winter to relax on a tropical island, think again.

He’s spending time with local conservationists to help bolster the population of this bird, classed as an Endangered Species. That means hand rearing – and THAT means long days: “The first feed is at 6.00am, then...

The aim is to set a good example over the use of plastics and to encourage changes in behaviour. Living Coasts was the first aquarium in the UK to sign up and is one of seven in this country supporting the initiative. The coastal zoo and aquarium stopped selling single-use plastic drinks bottles in 2017. The new movement, launched at the fifth #OurOcean conference, held in Bali, has signed up...

The scheme has helped to renew 77 memorials dedicated to the county’s fallen war heroes, from traditional granite crosses and...

“It’s a big blow, but when you work with animals you have to deal with the low points as well as the highs.” A post-mortem examination will be carried out by the Zoo’s...

Two brothers killed during the First World War have been reunited on a War Memorial just in time for the 100th anniversary of the end of the war.

The medals had been awarded to the Hine brothers, who lived in the East Devon village of Awliscombe, and came in to Chilcotts Auctioneers to be sold.

Research carried out by Chilcotts uncovered the fact that although both were killed during the First World War, only one brother was commemorated on the War Memorial in the village.

Private George Hine of the 8th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment, was killed at the age of 24...

Exeter businesses go bonkers conkers

There’s nothing like a competitive game of conkers and teams taking part in the annual Brewin Dolphin Bonkers Conkers event in Exeter were certainly in it to win it.

Taking place at Lloyds Lounge, different businesses were competing – all of them keen to take home the coveted King Conker trophy. For the uninitiated, conkers are the seeds of horse chestnut trees and the traditional game is played between two people who each have their selected conker on a strong piece of string. Players take it in turns to strike until the defeated conker is destroyed.
