Freemasons give £45,000 to victims of southern African cyclone

Thousands of people across Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe whose lives have been devastated by Cyclone Idai will be given access to clean water, as well as tarpaulins, plastic sheets and other emergency supplies, thanks to a grant from the Masonic Charitable Foundation, the freemasons' charity.

The money is being donated to Plan International UK which is working to help survivors, including young women and children, who are at particular risk.

Nearly two thirds (63%) of teachers would support a ban on motor vehicles outside the school gates during school drop off and pick up times, new figures reveal, as 29 schools in Devon start the annual Big Pedal challenge to walk, scoot or cycle their journeys.

A YouGov poll, carried out for Sustrans, the walking and cycling charity, surveyed 840 teaching professionals across the UK about their attitudes towards air pollution and the actions they think should be taken to improve air quality outside the school gates.

The first ever exhibition of paintings and works of art created by artists who have no “mind’s eye” will cast new light on the creative brain when it goes comes to Exeter in March.

Devon county council is to open up its funding opportunities to benefit a wider range of local groups and community projects.

It’s launching three new funds worth nearly £460,000 to support local voluntary and community organisations, groups and projects that help to make communities stronger, and that improve people’s wellbeing.

The aim is to encourage people to work together to feel part of their communities and to be active in them.

Councils call for High Streets Fund for new towns

Council leaders have jointly called on government to extend funding to create and improve town centres in new towns.

Following six years of major restoration work, the National Trust’s ambitious project to save Castle Drogo, the last castle built in England, is nearing completion. Building work will still be visible, with some external work to be carried out during 2019, however, for the first time in its life the building will be watertight.

Staff now have a big task ahead of them as they begin the huge job of moving all the contents, many of which have been in storage, back in. It’s a job which is expected to take all year. There’s plenty to do - from painting and decorating, to rediscovering...

Ward visiting times at the RD&E will change to 10.30am-8pm from 1 April, 2019, following a year-long pilot to test out more ‘open’ and flexible public visiting times.

For several years, public visiting at the RD&E was limited to afternoons and evenings, but in February 2018 the Trust began piloting 8am-8pm visiting, in line with many other local and national Trusts.
