Bishop Fleming’s Exeter and Torquay offices are celebrating a successful year-long partnership with FORCE Cancer Charity, raising over £8,000 to support people affected by cancer across the region.

The collaboration formed part of the firm’s 1% for Communities initiative, launched in July 2024, which pledges to give back 1% of Bishop Fleming’s turnover through fundraising, volunteering, and community-focused projects.

At an event held at The Royal Society (Thursday, 31 January 2019) Stephen Mariadas was awarded a Technical Teaching Fellowship from the Education and Training Foundation (ETF) in partnership with the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851.

THE SWAN at Bampton is celebrating after being named for the third year running as one of the top 50 gastropubs in the country at an industry-wide awards ceremony in Maidenhead recently (January 28, 2019).

The multi-award-winning pub has polled in at number 20 this year. It received a special award as the highest climber in the list in 2018 when it was rated 28th and in 2017 it was positioned just inside the chart at 50.

Residents across Devon are being urged to hold on to any broken electrical items to help break a world record in Exeter next month.

The Big Fix is on Saturday 23 February and is the headline event of the 3rd Annual Reuse Week, which showcases the work of Devon’s many and varied Reuse organisations.

All the events, including the Big Fix, are run by local reuse charities and community groups, and this year it will run over the February half term and will have a family focus.

Roads across the county have generally improved throughout the day, as highways teams have been working hard to clear them.

On high ground, good progress has been made with gritters, tractors, ploughs and snow blowers, such that access to the moors tomorrow (Saturday) should be resumed.

Exeter brothers praised for emergency response

Two young brothers have been commended for knowing what to do in an emergency.

Their dad, March Le-fey, had a seizure caused by hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar) at the family home in Whipton, Exeter.

He had collapsed, was unconscious, and needed urgent medical help.

Six-year-old, Isaac, called for help from his nine-year-old brother, Elliot who dialled 999.

Elliot told South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) 999 Call Handler Lucy Frith exactly what was wrong.

Have your say on plans to close public toilets in Exeter

People will have a chance to have their say on proposals to close a number of public toilets in Exeter as part of online consultation which begins today.

The consultation will last three weeks and the Council is urging people to give their views on the proposals by filling in an online survey. Those who do not want to go online can pick up a paper version from the Council’s Customer Service Centre in Paris Street.

Motorists advised not to travel unless essential

Devon County Council is urging people across snow-hit areas of the county not to travel tomorrow morning (Friday 1 February) unless absolutely essential.

Heavy snow has caused traffic disruption in parts of the county earlier this afternoon and this evening.

The A380 was completely closed at Ideford Dip due to a vehicle blocking the road, and the A38 Telegraph Hill has been blocked by stationary traffic but work is underway to reopen the A38 and free south bound traffic from the M5.

Warning of possible travel disruption as heavy snow forecast for parts Devon

Devon County Council is warning of the potential for travel disruption in parts of the county this afternoon (Thursday 31 January) and into tomorrow morning.

A band of rain and sleet is forecast to hit Devon from midday which could fall as snow from around 3pm today.

Snow response plans for Haldon/Telegraph Hill and the North Devon Link Road are being activated from midday.

Although the amount of snow is expected to vary across the county, areas of high ground could see up to 10cm of snow over a five-hour period.

People are being urged to think carefully about their journey home from work tomorrow following forecasts of further snow.

A countywide freeze is expected tonight (Wednesday 30 January), with road surface temperatures in some areas set to plunge below -4C.

Anyone travelling is reminded to take extra care as roads and paths could be icy overnight and tomorrow morning. The Met Office is forecasting another band of wintry showers to hit the county from around lunchtime tomorrow.

Severe Weather Protocol activated to encourage rough sleepers to come in out of the cold

With temperatures falling and snow showers hitting the county, Exeter City Council has activated its Severe Weather Protocol (SWEP) and is making available extra accommodation for rough sleepers to come in out of the cold.

The protocol allows the Council to work with its partner agencies Julian House, BCHA and St Petrocks to organise accommodation for anyone rough sleeping or at risk of rough sleeping during severe weather.
