Latest plans for Exeter’s fire-hit landmark hotel

The project to restore a much-loved Exeter landmark to its former glory is expected to clear another hurdle next week.

Members of Exeter City Council’s planning committee will consider plans for the Royal Clarence Hotel, which was gutted by a fire in October 2016.

Local company Nooko has been working to prepare the site on Cathedral Green since collecting the keys from previous owners Akkeron in April last year. Permission was granted as long ago as October 2022 for 25 new high-quality apartments on the site, most with views across the green to the cathedral. Prices will...

Volunteers needed to help map Exeter's tree canopy

Volunteers are being sought to help map Exeter’s tree canopy.

Exeter has higher than average tree coverage across the city. That figure was 24.5% when last mapped in 2006.

Thirteen years later and it is reckoned that coverage has gone down slightly and is now threatened by new pests and diseases, as well as development and climate change.

That’s why the City Council is working closely with Treeconomics based at the University to properly map Exeter’s current tree canopy.

In order for Treeconomics to carry out the survey, they are looking for volunteers to...

Giant petrels will be “temporary” winners from the effects of climate change in the Antarctic region – but males and females will benefit in very different ways, a new study shows.

The study, by experts from the University of Exeter and the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), is one the first to analyse how different sexes of the same species could be affected by changing conditions through global warming.

The research shows that giant petrels – known colloquially as “stinkers” – will benefit from an increased number of warm weather anomalies in the region, while changes to...
