Topsham’s history takes centre stage with the unveiling of new heritage boards and a Maritime Trail—an exciting project that’s earned the support of the Earl of Devon.

The aim of the new heritage information boards and trail is to connect visitors and residents with the town’s extraordinary past.

Through the project led by Topsham Museum, the trail and boards tell a story from Roman occupation, through Atlantic fishing ventures and a thriving wool trade, and across centuries of maritime shipbuilding and commerce.

Urgent repairs on River Exe Viaduct near Tiverton

Overnight road closures will be needed on the A361 near Tiverton next week to carry out urgent structural repairs on the River Exe Viaduct.

An expansion joint at the eastern end of the viaduct, near Bolham roundabout, is failing and needs to be replaced as soon as possible.

The A361 will be closed overnight between Bolham and Ashmill for two nights on Wednesday 26 June and Thursday 27 June from 7pm to 7am for the repairs to be carried out. If the work is not completed in two evenings, an overnight closure is also provisionally booked for the evening of Friday 28 June....

Streetlight energy plan set to slash council's carbon emissions by 36 per cent

The final phase of a project to convert every one of Devon County Council’s 79,000 streetlights to low carbon LEDs has begun.

And once complete Devon County Council (DCC) will have reduced the carbon emissions generated by its streetlighting by 75 per cent, reducing carbon emissions by more than 15,000 tonnes each year, the equivalent of taking 8,000 cars off the road.

In February DCC declared a ‘climate emergency’ and is now working with other councils, emergency services and business groups to ensure that Devon achieves a net zero carbon footprint.

Parking offer to support local economy and spread the peak of Saturday shopping

People coming into Exeter on Thursday evenings will now be able to park for free in the City Council’s three pay-on-foot muti-storey car parks.

The offer, which starts tomorrow (Thursday 20 June), has been brought in to support Thursday late night shopping and the wider evening economy. It is also aimed at spreading the peak of Saturday shopping and easing congestion on the roads.

Volunteers needed to help map Exeter's tree canopy

Volunteers are being sought to help map Exeter’s tree canopy.

Exeter has higher than average tree coverage across the city. That figure was 24.5% when last mapped in 2006.

Thirteen years later and it is reckoned that coverage has gone down slightly and is now threatened by new pests and diseases, as well as development and climate change.

That’s why the City Council is working closely with Treeconomics based at the University to properly map Exeter’s current tree canopy.

An exciting and innovative new dementia service has just been launched for the local community of Teignmouth. The Ness Shed is built on the researched and well-known concept of the ‘Men’s Shed’ and, using the expertise of trained professionals, creates a unique environment for individuals with dementia to take part in manual and creative activities.
