Exeter Racecourse has launched a brand-new Community Raceday and is inviting people across Devon to nominate a community hero who deserves recognition.

Community Raceday takes place on Friday, February 20, during half term, and coincides with Devon Day at the racecourse. The initiative celebrates the people who make a real difference in their communities – from volunteers and carers to sports coaches, fundraisers and quiet grafters who go above and beyond.

Super chef Aidan takes on 5,000-mile cycle challenge

Cycling chef Aidan King has set himself a tough challenge for 2019.

The 22-year-old from Tiverton is aiming to ride 5,000 miles in 12 months to raise money for FORCE Cancer Charity.

“It was Christmas Day at my parents’ and the subject of stupid challenges came up,” he explained. “A few beers later and I’d committed to cycling 5,000 miles.

“I went out on my bike on January 1st in the wind and the rain and I’ve been trying to average around 100 miles every week since.”

South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) has been awarded the prestigious Disability Confident Leader status by the Department for Work and Pensions. A Ranger from Stover Country Park near Newton Abbot has been shortlisted for a top environmental award.

Rob Ballard is one of seven finalists in the running for the BIG Biodiversity Champion Award 2019.

Visitors to Dartmoor are being urged to help prevent wildfires as the dry weather continues.

Of particular concern are discarded cigarettes, Chinese lanterns and disposable barbecues.

Broken glass, camping stoves matches and lighters are also highlighted as potential dangers.

The call for vigilance has come from the Dartmoor Wild Fire Liaison Group, a body representing land owners, the Dartmoor Commoners’ Council and Dartmoor National Park Authority (DNPA).

The sun shone brightly the 15th Marnie Burgoyne Memorial Golf Day earlier this month when 50 teams, many from local businesses, took to the fairways at Exeter Golf & Country Club and helped to raise a fantastic £16,717 for local charity Hospiscare .
