Exeter Racecourse has launched a brand-new Community Raceday and is inviting people across Devon to nominate a community hero who deserves recognition.

Community Raceday takes place on Friday, February 20, during half term, and coincides with Devon Day at the racecourse. The initiative celebrates the people who make a real difference in their communities – from volunteers and carers to sports coaches, fundraisers and quiet grafters who go above and beyond.

Exeter lawyer Penny Scott, who has contributed to the consultation on the Domestic Abuse Bill which is now being debated in Parliament, says more investment is needed if the Bill is to be effective.

Penny, who is a partner at Cartridges Law and chair of the Family Law Committee of the Law Society, said it was part of the business of the Committee to respond to bills of this nature with recommendations.

A brand-new primary school has been opened at Redrow Homes’ Romansfield development in Okehampton, Devon.

St James Church of England Primary & Nursery School, for children aged two to 11, has recently opened and is situated opposite the site providing parents with the peace of mind that their little ones can walk to school safely and within a short distance.

With 13 children having already enrolled, and more expected in September, the school is helping to create a thriving community at Romansfield which only launched in February this year.

Redrow Homes offers community fund for deserving causes in Okehampton

Redrow Homes has created a community fund to donate to the most deserving causes in Okehampton, home to its new Romansfield development.

The housebuilder is inviting local people and organisations to write to them, explaining how they would benefit from funding. The team at Redrow will then decide on which causes will receive the £2,000 financial boost.

Previously, funding provided by other Redrow divisions has contributed towards new benches for a local primary school and a book exchange being opened in an old converted telephone box for the community to enjoy.

A popular Devon family attraction has invested £570,000 in their theme park and resort to improve visitor experience and facilities.

Crealy Theme Park and Resort have invested the large sum of money to improve the facilities for visitors in time for the summer, including completely revamping the picnic area, erecting a permanent Big Top arena and creating a toilet facility for people with additional needs. Summer crisis: RSPCA gets call about dumped animal every 6 minutes

The RSPCA is warning of a summer abandonment crisis with a 85% increase in the number of reports about dumped animals in the summer months.

The oldest and biggest animal welfare charity in England and Wales is expecting to see a huge rise in calls about abandoned pets, often dumped in boxes, thrown in bins or left on the side of roads.

Throughout June, July and August last year, the RSPCA received 23,673** calls about dumped animals which equates to one call every 6 minutes.
