Exeter Pride given £20,000 in National Lottery funding to help deliver bigger event

THE organising committee and trustees behind Exeter Pride have been awarded £20,000 in National Lottery funding to support their work in delivering an even bigger and better event.

Exeter Pride, which celebrates lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and queer/questioning plus (LGBTQ+) communities, has gone from strength to strength in recent years and now organises one of the largest free pride events in the South West.

Accessibility and inclusivity are at the core of Exeter Pride’s mission to bring the whole community together in a celebration of diversity.

Digital Dine and Donate for Tree of Hope

The Fairchild family from Exeter, Devon are currently raising money for an Innowalk machine for daughter Jessica, 13, who has cerebral palsy. The £25,000 equipment is not funded by the NHS but will help Jessica exercise efficiently, which in turn will help her build up her muscles, reduce stiffness and even improve her digestion.

They will be taking part in charity Tree of Hope’s nationwide fundraiser Dine and Donate. Tree of Hope is asking supporters to enjoy digital dinner parties to help raise funds for sick and disabled children...

Exeter College has offered its state-of-the-art industrial kitchen facilities to Food4Heroes; a charity that provides free nutritious meals to frontline NHS staff during the Coronavirus pandemic.

The College’s @34 training kitchens will now be in use providing nutritionally balanced, free meals to NHS staff. These meals will include a vegetarian and a meat option and allergens will be listed on the dishes provided. Meals will be distributed to Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital in microwavable containers for NHS staff to take.

A grassroots community project has raised an incredible £3000 in aid of their production of vital Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for community-based health and care workers in their first weekend. They are hoping to continue raising around £1000 a day to keep up with the demand for face shields in the local community.

New Date for Race for Life in Exeter

ORGANISERS of Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life in Exeter have announced a new date this autumn for the much-loved event.

The charity has postponed Race for Life events this spring and summer across the UK to protect the country’s health during the coronavirus outbreak. This includes the Race for Life 5K series which starts at Westpoint on 18th and 19 July, which can no longer take place.

A new editorial has summarised evidence and concluded that people aged 60-69 are at risk of severe illness if infected with COVID-19.

Writing in the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine, Professor Azeem Majeed, Head of the Department of Primary Care & Public Health at Imperial College London, said that while this group is at a lower risk of severe illness when compared to those aged 70 years or older, their risk is still considerable.

Exeter cancer team takes on Captain Tom style challenge

National hero Captain Tom Moore has inspired cancer specialists from the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital to take on their own fundraising challenge.

Staff from the Oncology Department at the RD&E are planning to complete laps of the hospital in aid of FORCE Cancer Charity.

The plan is for doctors, nurses, radiographers and other healthcare professionals from the hospital to form teams of at least 12 people to take on the 12-hour challenge every day from Monday to Friday next week, April 27 to May 1.

The Neighbourly Community Fund, set up less than a month ago and kickstarted by M&S, has announced its support for local organisations in Devon, from food banks to youth clubs. The nationwide scheme has been set up to help provide immediate emergency funding to support the most vulnerable during the Covid-19 crisis.
