Exeter Pride given £20,000 in National Lottery funding to help deliver bigger event

THE organising committee and trustees behind Exeter Pride have been awarded £20,000 in National Lottery funding to support their work in delivering an even bigger and better event.

Exeter Pride, which celebrates lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and queer/questioning plus (LGBTQ+) communities, has gone from strength to strength in recent years and now organises one of the largest free pride events in the South West.

Accessibility and inclusivity are at the core of Exeter Pride’s mission to bring the whole community together in a celebration of diversity.

Families across England will get the chance to learn British Sign Language in the comfort of their own homes with free online classes launched today (Friday, May 8th).

The series of classes will be run by the National Deaf Children’s Society every Friday for 12 weeks as part of its Family Sign Language programme. The date was picked to mark Deaf Awareness Week (May 4th-8th).

Each class will cover a different topic, including vocabulary and conversation related to family life so parents and children can learn together.

Exeter cartoonist Ross Hendrick has recently completed his latest work, a comic book which humorously yet thoughtfully documents the struggles with social anxiety.

Ross, who has previously worked for such publications as The Beano, Viz and the Express & Echo, is the creator of a popular webcomic called Socially Awkward Misfit. The protagonist is a character called Sam (an acronym of Socially Awkward Misfit) who is loosely based on Ross's own life.

Stagecoach bus workers right across the country have joined together to create a special video to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day. Bus drivers, engineers, managers, cleaners and many other employees feature in the tribute video covering Forces’ Sweetheart Dame Vera Lynn’s wartime anthem “We’ll meet again”.

Report measures public demand for face masks to protect against COVID-19

One in four people already own a disposable face mask to protect themselves against COVID-19, a new study says – despite the UK government saying evidence for their use is “weak”.

A project that links technology and housing to improve health and wellbeing in Cornwall is developing a guide to using online devices to reduce feelings of isolation during COVID-19 lockdown.

Led by the University of Exeter, the Smartline project researches the relationship between technology and the way people live in their homes and communities.
