Nationwide and Dementia UK’s free face-to-face clinics are returning to Nationwide’s Newton Abbot, Plymouth, Barnstaple and Exmouth, branches this September, offering specialist support in a safe, comfortable and private space for people to discuss any aspect of dementia.

Hosted by Dementia UK’s Admiral Nurses, the clinics are open to anyone impacted by dementia, offering life-changing support to families and individuals in the area. The clinics will take place throughout September, and appointments can be booked via Dementia UK’s website here .

The parents of a three-year-old boy from St Thomas, in Exeter, have publicly thanked Caudwell Children, the national charity that provides practical and emotional support to disabled children and their families, for agreeing to fund a pack of tactile sensory equipment for their son.

Harry Evenden, was diagnosed with autism in January of this year and the condition has left him non-verbal. He also has sensory processing difficulties and, together with the delays in his social communication skills, he finds it difficult to socialise with other children.

Exeter researchers secure prestigious national fellowships

Five leading researchers from across disciplines at the University of Exeter have received prestigious national fellowships, it has been announced.

Dr Rebecca Helm, Professor Oliver Hauser, Dr Jonathan Phillips, Dr Helen Eyles and Dr Joseph Costello have all given Future Leaders Fellowships, awarded by the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and announced today (April 23 2020).

Nineteen-year old student Millie Doodson is one of more than 1,300 people who have answered the call to help support Devon’s most vulnerable.

Since an urgent appeal was launched earlier this month people of all ages and backgrounds including lawyers, students, hairdressers, engineers and retired soldiers have registered to become Healthcare Assistants.

Some small sites with restricted access/egress points will remain closed in order to support Government’s social distancing guidance

Councillors at East Devon District Council have reviewed their decision to close parks and gardens at the commencement of lockdown and have agreed that the majority of the district’s large or easy to access park sites should be reopened to the public, as soon as possible.

Exeter family raising funds for vital equipment for 13-year-old Jessica

Digital Dine and Donate for Tree of Hope

The Fairchild family from Exeter, Devon are currently raising money for an Innowalk machine for daughter Jessica, 13, who has cerebral palsy. The £25,000 equipment is not funded by the NHS but will help Jessica exercise efficiently, which in turn will help her build up her muscles, reduce stiffness and even improve her digestion.

Exeter College links up with Food4Heroes to provide meals for NHS staff

Exeter College has offered its state-of-the-art industrial kitchen facilities to Food4Heroes; a charity that provides free nutritious meals to frontline NHS staff during the Coronavirus pandemic.

The College’s @34 training kitchens will now be in use providing nutritionally balanced, free meals to NHS staff. These meals will include a vegetarian and a meat option and allergens will be listed on the dishes provided. Meals will be distributed to Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital in microwavable containers for NHS staff to take.

A grassroots community project has raised an incredible £3000 in aid of their production of vital Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for community-based health and care workers in their first weekend. They are hoping to continue raising around £1000 a day to keep up with the demand for face shields in the local community.
