Century celebrations for Exeter care home resident

Celebrations have been in full swing at Lucerne House, as one of its residents reaches her centenary in style.

Maisie Elliott was joined by staff, relatives, friends and other residents as she received a telegram from the Queen in recognition of her landmark birthday. A champagne reception was held at the home and guests enjoyed a special birthday cake made by Maisie’s daughter in law.

Maisie grew up on a farm with 1 brother and 2 sisters. She started work at an early age in Woolworths before taking on different roles including a ticket officer for British Rail, where she met her husband and as an ARP for the civil defence during WW2. Later in life Maisie lived in many places including Taunton and Exeter where she finally settled. Maisie is surrounded by a loving family including her 2 sons, 1 daughter, 6 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. She is able to share memories with them, like the times she used to cycle from Bristol to Weston Super mare with her girlfriends on the weekend or her time volunteering for St John’s Ambulance. Maisie lived at home in Exeter before coming to Lucerne House, where she is enjoying a new chapter of her life.

The birthday girl, said: It has been a lovely day and so wonderful to be able to share this occasion with my family.

Among those relatives attending was Roger, Maisie’s son and Jeanette, Maisie’s daughter in law, who played host for the morning. Speaking about his centenarian Mother, Roger said: “Maisie is and has been a fantastic mother and friend to so many over the past hundred years, and it’s wonderful to be with her on this very special day to say just how proud she makes us feel.”

John Bayliss, Senior General Manager of Barchester Lucerne House added: “We’re delighted to be celebrating a truly remarkable woman as she reaches this amazing milestone. Maisie is such a popular resident who always has an interesting tale to tell, and we look forward to hearing many more as she breaks into her next century.”
