The Exeter community is being invited to contribute photographs of the local area to be included in a 2021 calendar which will be sold to raise funds for Devon Air Ambulance and Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust.

One of the University of Exeter’s rising research stars has been awarded a prestigious Engineering Research Fellowship, it has been announced.

Dr Alex Powell, from Exeter’s Physics and Astronomy department and the newly formed Centre for Metamaterial Research and Innovation (CMRI), has been awarded a highly competitive fellowship from the Royal Academy of Engineering.

A mace Sergeant who works at Exeter’s Guildhall has been given a second historic role within the city.

Davy Johnston has been appointed as the Beadle for Tuckers Hall. He will work in his new role for the Incorporation of Weavers, Fullers and Shearmen, the historic guild of Exeter’s ancient cloth trade. He is pictured in his new ceremonial uniform above.

To celebrate its third birthday, Devon Loves Dogs is asking people to submit their best cake photos for the chance to win a doggy hamper.

All you have to do is bake a dog-friendly cake, take a photo and send a digital copy to Devon Loves Dogs by 9am on Tuesday 25th August. It could be a ‘pup’ cake, a paw-shaped cake or any kind of cake, as long as it is safe for dogs.

Trainee guide dogs go back to school in Exeter

After a three-month break due to the Covid-19 outbreak, trainee guide dogs have been able to re-start their training in the south west, getting them ready to become life-changing guides.

In March, sight loss charity Guide Dogs closed its local training teams in line with Government advice, which meant around 55 trainee guide dogs across the region had to take a break.

The dogs were boarded full-time with local volunteers and all training with the local community team, based in Marsh Barton, was stopped.

Happy ending to lizard tale

A monitor lizard found wandering around an Exeter park has been reunited with its owner.

Rex, as he is known, escaped from his owner’s bedroom on Tuesday night and made his way into the neighbouring Belle Isle Park.

A member of the public spotted the metre-long lizard in the wooded area of the park whilst out walking on Wednesday afternoon.

The woman raised the alarm and parks staff from Exeter City Council were able to relocate Rex in long grass and put him into safe keeping at Exeter Exotics.
