The Devon County Show is delighted to announce that acclaimed actor and countryside advocate Martin Clunes will officially open the Heavy Horse Festival, in association with WHISTLEFISH, at 10am on Thursday 21st May .

A lifelong champion of Britain’s native heavy horse breeds, Martin Clunes is not only a familiar face on screen but also a dedicated heavy horse owner. The Big Exeter Sleep Out 2023

Local charity Julian House is thrilled to announce that their annual Big Exeter Sleep-Out event will be returning yet again, following incredible support from the community in previous years.

Julian House is a charity organisation that supports the most vulnerable people in society, including those who are homeless. The charity operates more than 40 different projects, accommodation sites and social enterprises across South-West England, supporting more than 1600 individuals a year.

Still time to register for charity Christmas tree collection in Exeter

Residents in Exeter still have time to book a charity collection of their real Christmas tree – and raise money for a great cause at the same time.

The service is being offered by Hospiscare in return for a donation to the charity. The suggested donation is £10 per tree.

People must register for the service by 11.59pm on Sunday 8 January.

Drivers advised to plan ahead as A30 resurfacing work resumes in Devon

Drivers using the A30 in Devon are advised to plan ahead and allow a little extra time for their journeys ahead of work starting on the second phase of a resurfacing scheme between Fingle Glen and Alphington early in the new year.

The National Highways scheme, to install low-noise surfacing, new lining and studs, started in October and the westbound carriageway work, between the Alphington and Fingle Glen junctions, was completed on 16 December with all traffic management removed for the Christmas break.

As Devon’s NHS continues to experience severe pressure, local NHS teams are asking friends and relatives of people who are ready to go home from hospital to do all they can to pick them up as soon as possible.

All four of the county’s acute hospitals are seeing a very high number of people who are very poorly and need hospital care, particularly with Covid, flu, other respiratory illnesses and norovirus.

That means that when someone has been assessed by NHS staff as being medically fit to leave, it’s important they are helped home as soon as possible.

Devon Air Ambulance is sometimes called to assist with Inter Hospital Transfers (IHT) but more recently, they have undertaken a new ‘Rapid Transfer Service’ for stroke patients.

Strokes are the second most common cause of death worldwide. 85% of strokes are caused by a blockage (a clot called a thrombus) in the small blood vessels of the brain, and the remaining 15% occur as a result of a bleed in the brain.
