Funding bid to replace Mallison Bridge

A replacement for Exeter Quay’s Mallison Bridge could be back on the cards through a bid for government cash.

The wooden bridge, originally built in 1984 and named after a professor who left money to the city, closed in 2018 because of safety concerns after its timbers rotted. It was torn down in 2020.

As a result, a small alleyway next to Commercial Road is currently the only way for pedestrians and cyclists to access the main part of the quay from Cricklepit Suspension Bridge.

Planning permission for a replacement pedestrian and cycle bridge was given in...

The competition runs from January to June 2023, with the collective goal of travelling 384.4 million meters by the end of the mission. This sounds like a big challenge, however, if the paddleboarding community comes together it’s possible!

The competition comes with one big prize at the end of the competition, as well as monthly prizes for the paddler who has travelled the furthest during the month. There is still plenty of time to get out on the water and join the competition. Just don’t forget to stay safe,...

In 2020, businesses across Devon, the UK, and much of the rest of the world were forced to quickly utilise previously mostly ignored technologies. The big winner of this was live streaming and related live video tech. It became a necessity, and even though live streams and video calls aren’t especially essential to businesses anymore, the tech has become increasingly important.

Now, local businesses in Exeter are looking to continue to utilise live streaming for its inherent perks, such as convenience and remote immersion. It’s giving rise to new ways to reach much further afield...

Heavitree Road student flats plans rejected

Councillors throw out student and co-living plans for old police station site

Major plans for student and co-living blocks at Exeter’s former Heavitree Road police station have been rejected.

The city council’s planning committee threw out the application on Monday [20 February] after criticism of what one councillor described as two “monolithic blocks” that would have been built opposite St Luke’s Campus.

The plans had been altered after members said they were ‘minded to refuse’ a previous version in October, with the total number of rooms cut by 80 to 955. Both...

By Ollie Heptinstall, local democracy reporter.

A new Exwick sports pavilion and 3G sports pitch will be built by Exeter College.

It involves demolishing changing rooms and erecting a new sports pavilion along with an ‘all-weather’ 3G pitch, at the site of an existing rugby pitch.

The city council’s planning committee unanimously approved the application on Monday [20 February]. It was initially submitted in November 2021 but received several objections, leading to a revised plan being submitted late last year.
