Devon County Show Confirms 106,000 Visitors in Another Record-Breaking Year

The tickets have now been counted, and Devon County Show has officially confirmed an audited attendance of 106,000 visitors for 2026 — an uplift of 5,000 on last year’s record-breaking figure.

This year’s Show coincided with the late May half‑term break, a rare calendar alignment that contributed to an especially strong family turnout. While children go free on Saturday and therefore cannot be fully audited, the organisers witnessed a noticeably higher number of young visitors enjoying the attractions, activities and livestock displays.

A group of 75 South West Water employees came together to raise awareness for 2.5 billion people without a toilet, at Peninsula House in Rydon Lane, on World Toilet Day (this week.

Over 300 fake Wikipedia accounts traced to single company

Wikipedia the community generated online encyclopaedia has named and shamed a Texas PR agency that created over 300 fake accounts used to edit entries on the site.

The Wikimedia foundation a not-for profit organisation responsible of the site has served the PR company with a ‘cease and desist’ letter to stop manipulating articles and discussions.

The PR Company ‘Wiki-PR’ was caught practicing ‘meatpuppetry’ as a result of an investigation by the company in October.

Christmas Tree festival at A la Ronde

On Sunday 24 November, staff and volunteers invite visitors to come along and enjoy what has become an annual event in the A la Ronde calendar. The third annual community Christmas Tree Festival will remain in place for visitors to enjoy each weekend until 15 December.

Local organisations have been hard at work perfecting their trees which will be displayed in the grounds of the 16-sided National Trust property. The different decorating themes have been kept a closely guarded secret – one that will be revealed when the grounds open at 11.30am.

Wednesday saw the opening of an exciting new store on Exeter High Street, ‘The White Company’. Laden with mince pies, chocolates and even champagne to give away, shop assistants welcomed wave after wave of customers throughout the day.

The store offers a wide range of products from fragrances to baby clothes to bed linen, and is “beautifully laid-out”, as one customer said.

Local teenager is made Principal composer of the National Youth Orchestra

A local teenager has been named as principal composer with the National Youth Orchestra (NYO).

17 year-old Michael Brailey from Crediton, will be responsible for working with musicians in the Orchestra to create new symphonic music as well as diverse ensemble pieces.

Michael said: “Being in NYO 2014 means an unbelievable amount to me as a composer. Nowhere else would I have the chance to work so closely and learn from a whole symphony orchestra of talented musicians who are my age.

Local support group recognised at Downing Street reception

An Exeter support group which helps anyone affected by the death of a baby had the honour of attending a special reception at 10 Downing Street this week.

The reception, held by Sands, the stillbirth and neonatal death charity, and hosted by the Prime Minister’s wife, Samantha Cameron, was attended by representatives from some of the charity’s local groups, including the Exeter Sands group.

Shoppers in Exeter are to get an early Christmas present with the announcement of special offers in City-Council run Pay & Display car parks in the run up to Christmas.

Police imposter tries to stop real officer

A man from Plymouth who has been stopping other road users for traffic offences has been arrested for impersonating a police officer.

An unnamed 37 years-old man had bought a flashing blue light and siren for his car had been stopping road users for offences such as speeding.

One motorist the man attempted to stop was an off-duty police officer. The off-duty officer refused to stop for the man when they realised that the car was not an official vehicle.

Renewed appeal for help in finding missing Exeter pensioner Joan

Police in Exeter are growing increasingly concerned about a 78-year-old woman who has not been seen since 9.30pm on Friday 15 November. Joan Russell was last seen at her home address in the Emmanuel Close area of Exeter. Because of her age and her condition she is considered vulnerable and police are concerned for her welfare. East Devon District Council has introduced a new service for residents who like to carry out transactions on their mobile phone.

The East Devon App enables people to access various council services on their smartphone, with both i-Phone and Android systems supported.
