Sheep Drive in 2012

Sheep Return to Bideford Bridge in Celebration of 555 Years of Westcountry Wool Heritage

A centuries-old tradition will return to North Devon when sheep are driven across Bideford Bridge during the Bideford Town Fair on Saturday 6 June at 10.00am.

The ceremonial sheep drive, last undertaken in 2012, will be led by the historic Incorporation of Weavers, Fullers and Shearmen as part of celebrations marking 555 years since the Guild was gifted land in Exeter on which it built the magnificent Tuckers Hall - the medieval home of the Incorporation and one of the country’s most important surviving guild halls.

Online music service, Spotify has faced scrutiny by advertising watchdog over a promotional email containing offensive language. The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) upheld a complaint on a promotional email suggesting users listen to the Lily Allen song “F*** You”. The email read: "Have you heard this song by Lily Allen? Give it a try. F*** You". Landlord fined £4,000 for safety issues

A landlord in Dawlish has been fined £4,000 for renting out an unsafe property.

Curtis Betteridge was prosecuted by Teignbridge District Council after ignoring warnings to make a flat on Iddesleigh terrace meet fire and safety regulations.

It is the first time Teignbridge has taken court action against a landlord.

The case was heard before South Devon Magistrates, sitting in Torquay, on Tuesday December 2. Mr Betteridge and the case has tried in his absence.

Social media users given legal advice

The Government’s chief legal advisor will in future issue advisory notices to Twitter and Facebook users to help prevent them committing a contempt of court.

The advice has previously only been issued to journalists on a ‘not for publication basis’ is designed to make to make sure a fair trial takes place will warn people not to comment on certain aspects of court cases.

Mobile phone network EE will bring 4G mobile broadband to Exeter before Christmas.

EE is the first mobile network to bring 4G to Exeter and will see customers get speeds up to five times faster than the current 3G network.

Exeter City Council to pay Living Wage

Exeter City Council has announced it will begin paying its staff the ‘living wage’.

64 council staff will see their hourly pay rise to £7.65 per hour from January 1 next year.

The decision is designed to encourage businesses in Exeter to also make the move onto the higher pay standard as the council believes it will boost the local economy. New recycling centre for Sidmouth area

Devon County Council is officially opening its brand new state of the art Recycling Centre which will serve Sidmouth, Ottery St Mary and the surrounding villages. The gates will open to the public on Tuesday 10 December 2013 at 11.30am The facility replaces the old centre at Woods Farm which is now inadequate to meet modern demands. Devon County Councillor Alan Connett will take over as Leader of the Liberal Democrat group on Devon County Council from Monday 2 December.

Cllr Connett has been a member of the County Council since 2008, where he represents the Exminster and Kenton electoral division.

Former leader Councillor Des Hannon has stepped aside having been appointed to a full time role in the private sector.

Cllr Hannon will continue to represent Tiverton East and maintain his membership of council committees.

Compounds in cannabis could limit stroke damage

UK Stroke Forum have revealed that compounds found in cannabis could be beneficial to stroke victims.

It has been suggested, after research was conducted at the University of Nottingham, that chemical comounds found in cannabis may help to reduce brain damage following a stroke.

The findings showed that the compounds could reduce the size of a stroke and improve neurological function.
