Sheep Return to Bideford Bridge in Celebration of 555 Years of Westcountry Wool Heritage

A centuries-old tradition will return to North Devon when sheep are driven across Bideford Bridge during the Bideford Town Fair on Saturday 6 June at 10.00am.

The ceremonial sheep drive, last undertaken in 2012, will be led by the historic Incorporation of Weavers, Fullers and Shearmen as part of celebrations marking 555 years since the Guild was gifted land in Exeter on which it built the magnificent Tuckers Hall - the medieval home of the Incorporation and one of the country’s most important surviving guild halls.

Local artist seeks missing portfolio

A local artist and Christmas market trader is desperately seeking help to recover her lost portfolio.

Mary Tempest, who also works for Exeter City Council’s tourism centre as an illustrator misplaced the portfolio after stopping at a busy cashpoint in the City Centre yesterday evening.

After realising she had misplaced her work Mary returned to the cashpoint but it had already gone. The portfolio held in a black A3 size Art bag held many finished and unfinished pencil drawings that Mary had sold on her stall in the Christmas market on the Cathedral Green.

Exeter professor works on game that blurs reality

A University of Exeter professor is on a research team creating videogames which blur the boundaries between real and virtual worlds.

Gabriella Giannachi, The University of Exeter’s Performance and New Media Professor, is part of the Videogames Research Network being led by the University of Lincoln’s Games Research Group.

The Network aims to bring together games developers, performance practitioners and academics to explore new concepts in the design and creation of movement-based games.

South West businesses see rates freeze

70,000 business premises in the South West will see their business rates freeze or fall in new cap to business rates introduced in the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement today.

In the plans many businesses will continue to receive discounted rates from the Small business rates relief while business worth less than £50,000 will gain a £1,000 discount to their business rates.

The plans will also see 44,000 South west businesses pay no rates at all.

A photograph taken by a researcher from the University of Exeter of a pair of burying beetles feeding on an animal carcass has won first prize in a new competition. Paul Hopwood’s image, snapped in the Cornish countryside, was announced as the winner of NERC’s inaugural short article and photography competition at an awards ceremony in London yesterday. Katie's TV career in doubt after 'vile' tweet

Uncertainty has been cast over the future TV career of outspoken Exeter media personality Katie Hopkins following a petition calling for her to be banned from any future appearances.

The uproar follows a tweet in the aftermath of last week's tragic helicopter crash in which the 38-year-old wrote : "Life expectancy in Scotland based 07/08 birth is 59.5. Goodness me. That lot will do anything to avoid working until retirement."

Rise in pension age brought forward

The date at which someone must be 68 to draw a state pension has been brought forward by around 10 years.

The change to be announced today as part of Chancellor George Osborne’s Autumn statement will see the current scheduled date to be forward from 2046 to sometime in the mid-2030s.

Many commentators expect that the state pension age will rise again to 69 by the late 2040s and to 70 shortly after that.

The recent changes will affect people aged in their 40s while further changes could see people in their 20s work until in their 70s.

The Exeter Dental Centre has set up a food bank donation point, for the festive period, at the city centre dental practice.

Food banks have reported rapid rises in usage this year as individuals, couples and families are pushed to financial breaking point.

The Exeter Dental Centre has set up the donation point for its patients, staff and the public to drop food parcels of non-perishable items, before delivering it to The Mint Methodist Church, the current home of the Exeter Foodbank, in time for Christmas.

Cornwall’s longest-established film and television company, Three S Films, have chosen Exeter for their new office, after being commissioned to produce a video encouraging businesses to relocate to the city.

The government has announced that children in care will be able to stay with foster families until they turn 21.

Young people in care will still be able stay with foster families after they turn 18, following a new legal duty for councils to provide support.

£40 million over the next three years has been set aside to help local authorities provide the required financial support to foster families.
