Sheep Return to Bideford Bridge in Celebration of 555 Years of Westcountry Wool Heritage

A centuries-old tradition will return to North Devon when sheep are driven across Bideford Bridge during the Bideford Town Fair on Saturday 6 June at 10.00am.

The ceremonial sheep drive, last undertaken in 2012, will be led by the historic Incorporation of Weavers, Fullers and Shearmen as part of celebrations marking 555 years since the Guild was gifted land in Exeter on which it built the magnificent Tuckers Hall - the medieval home of the Incorporation and one of the country’s most important surviving guild halls.

Plans have been revealed on a new £7 million investment to Exeter’s Guildhall Shopping Centre.

The plans mark the first large investment in the centre since it was first built in 1972 and will modernise business premises in the centre.

The refurbished premises will be outfitted with features attractive to modern retailers and restaurants.

Carols on Exmouth Quay

Plans are being finalised for Exmouth Quay’s annual concert of traditional Christmas carols on Sunday December 15.

Exmouth Shanty Men, saxophonist Charlie Hearnshaw and the town concert band are among the guests at the event, which takes place outside the Peter Dixon Chandlery at 6pm.

Quay residents stage the concert each year with Christian Aid and in 2012 more than £500 was raised for the charity’s work among the world’s poorest people. This year the proceeds will be used to help tragic families involved in the typhoon in the Philippines.

Hundreds of committed fans braved the winter weather to welcome Luke Friend back home.

The atmosphere was electric outside the University of Exeter’s Great Hall as an army of “friendies” descended on his red carpet entrance.

The 17-year-old, X Factor star hugged lucky fans and signed autographs as he walked down the aisle before heading inside to start his exclusive homecoming gig.

The event was a sell-out with some fans queuing since 4am on Tuesday morning to get a ticket.

Ofsted has published its first ever report reviewing education standards in the South West.

The Annual Report 2012/13 for the South West finds that the proportion of good or outstanding primary and secondary schools in the region has increased. As a result, over 48,000 more pupils now benefit from a good or outstanding education than was the case 12 months ago.

St James' Park packed for Christmas carols

This Monday (9th December) saw a wonderfully festive celebration in St James' Park.

It promised to be one of the UK’s biggest carol services, transforming the home of Exeter’s football club into a hub of festive cheer.

An Exeter teenager has secured an Army scholarship and a place at the hugely-prestigious Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.
