Dreaming of a green Christmas

Whilst we are all busy thinking about presents and festive food over the coming days, Devon residents are also being asked to try and remember to recycle and re-use where ever possible.

Wrapping paper, cardboard, bottles and even christmas trees can all be recycled or taken to recycling centres. In many areas, a collection service for Christmas trees will make sure those trees are taken for chipping and composting.

Unwanted fake trees can be passed on to someone else via reuse sites such as Freegle, Freecycle or sold via Gumtree, Preloved, Amazon or Ebay or taken to your...

Regen SW and four Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs) have called on government to require all large renewable energy projects to have a formal plan for creating local jobs.

The call comes in a response to a government consultation on how large scale renewables should foster innovation, competition and support the development of low carbon supply chains as part of the Electricity Market Reform process.

The chief executive of Regen SW, Merlin Hyman, said:

“Nearly half of all UK infrastructure investment this decade will be in energy, over £100 billion. This is a...

The education charity behind a ground-breaking multicultural history project in Exeter believes it will have a lasting legacy in the city – and says it should be rolled out at other cities across the country.

The Heritage Lottery-funded Telling Our Stories, Finding Our Roots (TOSFOR) project officially ended on 20 December but volunteers will continue to maintain the website and work with local primary and secondary schools. The charity, Devon Development Education, is also hoping that the public will carry on submitting stories to the website about people and places from Exeter’s...

Preparatory work is due to start in January to widen Bridge Road in Exeter, in an attempt to improve traffic flow in and out of the city.

Bridge Road is currently a traffic congestion hotspot, suffering from tailbacks which block the Countess Wear junction and its approach routes.

Devon County Council is planning to widen Bridge Road to provide two continuous outbound lanes from Countess Wear to the Matford roundabout in order to tackle queuing and reduce journey times for all traffic, while at the same time improving pedestrian and cycle facilities.

Stone Axe Hammer - just passing through

RAMM’s geologist is helping research a stone axe hammer found in Lydford in the 1960s. Its finder recently brought the axe to the Devon Finds Liaison Officer for identification.

She turned to RAMM to help examine the stone to determine where it came from and to formally record it with the South West Museums Implement Petrology Group.

Axe hammers are quite rare; only about sixteen have been recorded from Devon and Cornwall, and curiously most are not of local rock. They are rarely found in an archaeological context so that their age and use remains uncertain. They may date...

Dramatic video captures storm in full force

Devon businessman Alex Wren caught these dramatic images of waves lashing Sidmouth seafront in a YouTube video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HnutWy2QSb8&feature=youtu.be

Passing cars feel the full force of the storm and buildings are showered with water.

In another seaside town a car was blown onto its roof.

Emergency services in Teignouth were called out after the incident but luckily the driver wasn't seriously injured.
