The Exeter takes on London to Paris cycle for Macmillan Cancer Support

UK health and life insurer The Exeter has announced that seven of their colleagues are preparing to cycle 340 miles from London to Paris in June 2026, as part of a major fundraising effort for the company’s corporate charity partner, Macmillan Cancer Support.

The team has already raised more than £23,000, with fundraising continuing ahead of the challenge. The ride reflects The Exeter’s ongoing commitment to supporting Macmillan’s work, which provides care, practical support and advocacy for people affected by cancer across the UK.

Exeter City Council raise council tax by 2%

Exeter City Council has proposed raising its charges for city council services by nearly 2% costing some residents over £260 a year.

The council has said the decision to raise their council tax charges by 1.99% is subject to the Government’s decision on how much councils can raise their tax by.

The average tax charge is set to rise to over £132 a year on properties in the band D property but can rise as high as £260 a year for those on the H council tax band.

Devon and Cornwall Police are urging motorists and garage owners to be vigilant following a spate of catalytic converter thefts. Catalytic converters are used to decrease air pollution by converting toxic exhaust emissions into non-toxic substances. The average converter contains one to two grams of platinum, palladium and rhodium, making them a target for thieves who can then attempt to sell these high value materials to scrap metal merchants. The NHS in Devon wants to involve members of the public in helping to make difficult decisions about treatments.

Voluntary public representatives, also known as lay members, are being recruited to Devon’s clinical policy committee to help make sure the best decisions are made when it comes to the funding of medicines and treatments.

Zephyr officers seize drugs and cash

Officers from the regional organised crime unit Zephyr seized drugs and a large quantity of cash and three vehicles after raiding a property in Exmouth yesterday.

Supported by officers from Devon and Cornwall Police support group and neighbourhood officers, they executed a search warrant under the Misuse of Drugs Act at a property in Bankside at about 12.15pm.

Officers arrested a 49-year-old man on suspicion of the possession of drugs with intention to supply and also money-laundering.

Dramatic footage showing the moment a prolific offender was captured by police has been released to the public. Filmed by the police helicopter, the video shows officers and a police dog track 29-year-old man, Dylan Taylor, who was later convicted of a series of offences across the Force area. Protected status for West Country beef and lamb

More than 60 unique British foods have now achieved protected status to help safeguard these iconic products and deliver a major boost to the economy.

West Country Beef and West Country Lamb have all today had their Protected Food Name (PFN) status confirmed by the European Union – joining the ranks of some of the UK’s best love foods such as Welsh Lamb, Melton Mowbray Pork Pies and Stilton cheese.

Over 5,000 Exeter households in Fuel Poverty

Over 10 percent of Exeter households are considered to be in fuel poverty according to a report discussed by Devon County Council today.

5,494 households in Exeter are currently spending more than 10% of their household income on heating or are unable to keep their home adequately heated.

Countywide, fuel poverty exists in every one of the areas looked at in the report. Currently Exeter has 7 of the worst 10 fuel poor areas in the county with the others being Ilfracombe Central, Bideford North and an unspecified area in Tiverton.

Budget proposes Teignbridge's fourth council tax freeze

Residents are encouraged to say whether they think Teignbridge has got its priorities right as the council moves forward with its draft budget plans.

People have the opportunity to tell the Council what they think after the Executive approved its initial financial plans for 2014/15 to 2016/17.

People turn to payday loans, overdrafts or keep problems hidden

People in the South West are struggling to pay their rent or mortgage, but hiding their problem by taking out risky loans or saying they would keep it secret from family and friends, says Shelter.

New research commissioned by the charity found that nearly one in four rent or mortgage payers in the South West has borrowed money to cover their housing costs. Alarmingly, across the country two per cent of rent or mortgage payers – the equivalent of nearly a million people in Britain – said they had taken out a ‘payday’ loan to help pay the rent or mortgage.

Man with suspected spinal injuries after A303 crash

A man has been taken to Wonford hospital with suspected spinal injuries after his car overturned on the A303 near Honiton this morning. Emergency services were called to the scene shortly before 7am this morning (15 January) due to the accident involving two vehicles. Fire crews attended the accident and used hydraulic cutting gear to free the man, thought to be aged between 20-30, from a veichle on its side. A303 closed and slow traffic in both directions between the A30 junction in Upottery and Southfields Roundabout in Donyatt, because of Police accident investigation work.
