The Exeter takes on London to Paris cycle for Macmillan Cancer Support

UK health and life insurer The Exeter has announced that seven of their colleagues are preparing to cycle 340 miles from London to Paris in June 2026, as part of a major fundraising effort for the company’s corporate charity partner, Macmillan Cancer Support.

The team has already raised more than £23,000, with fundraising continuing ahead of the challenge. The ride reflects The Exeter’s ongoing commitment to supporting Macmillan’s work, which provides care, practical support and advocacy for people affected by cancer across the UK.

Car blaze in Exeter city centre

Crew from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service were called to a car blaze in Exeter City Centre this afternoon.

One appliance from Danes Castle was mobilised following a report to the Fire Service Control Room of a vehicle on fire in South Street.

Crews arrived at the scene at around 2pm and confirmed a small fire had occured within a rear light cluster of a car.

The area was made safe before appliances left the scene.

Man in hospital after being rescued from River Exe

A man was last night admitted to hospital after being rescued from the River Exe.

The fire service were called to the incident after recieving a call from a member of the public reporting that a male had gone into the River Exe near the Port Royal Inn in Exeter.

Appliances are believed to have arrived at the scene at just after 6.30pm on Friday ( 25th January) evening.

One fire appliance from Exeter Middlemoor, one from Exeter Danes Castle, one from Exmouth with the boat and the Specialist Rescue Team were mobilised to the incident.

Warning to take care on roads and coast paths

Devon County Council is urging people to take care on the county’s roads and coast paths over the weekend.

Almost 5 miles (7.6km) of the south west coast path between Axmouth and near to the Devon/Dorset border at Lyme Regis has been shut this afternoon due to damage to the path caused by an active landslip.

Notices have been placed on site in liaison with the land managers, Natural England, and the path will be closed until further notice. The County Council will be investigating with Natural England what remedial works can be undertaken or whether an alternative route can...

Police urge vigilance after Exeter burglary

Police in Exeter have issued a warning following a burglary in the city today, Friday, 24 January 2014. The incident took place at a house on Mincinglake Road, Stoke Hill at around 11.25 am. A man knocked on the front door of the property and told the occupant – a woman in her 80s – that his football was in her back garden. As the victim went to unlock the back gate, the suspect entered the front door and went upstairs. The woman shouted at him and the man left the scene empty-handed. The suspect is described as being around 30-years-old and 5ft 6in tall. He was wearing a dark woolly hat....

Solar project to help Exeter's 5,000 in fuel poverty

A new project to help over 5,000 Exeter residents fight fuel poverty through solar energy is looking for a volunteer site for their first panels.

The scheme operated by Exeter Community Energy (Ecoe) will see a portion of the revenue they raise through the solar panels re-invested into community projects around the city, including projects that tackle fuel poverty.

The model has already proven successful elsewhere in the country with projects in Lewes and Bath well established and already providing advice and support on how communities can improve their fuel efficiency....

Much anticipated improvements to Payhembury’s play area are now complete, after improvements chosen by local children were put in place.

Payhembury Playing Field Committee and East Devon District Council have been working closely together with Payhembury Primary School to make £6,700 worth of improvements. Heavy rain forces festival cancellation

Moretonhampstead Festival of food and drink has been rained off despite not due to take place for another six weeks.

The Organising Committee of the festival took the decision to cancel the Festival due to the exceptional level of recent rain making the fields used for parking unsafe for users.

Bob Small the festival’s lead organiser explained the decision of the committee: “Even if we had six weeks of no rain from today the fields would still be far too wet.

“The ground on the fields would be unsuitable, unsafe, possibly even dangerous to use.”

Call For Artists and Makers for Devon Open Studios 2014

Registration for the 2014 Devon Open Studios event has now opened; artists and craftspeople in the county are invited to get involved.

Devon Open Studios, sponsored by Helpful Holidays, is the largest annual art event in the county attracting more than 20,000 visits to artists’ studios each year. During Devon Open Studios 2013, over 16 days in September, 250 artists opened their studios in 140 locations across Devon. The event was a tremendous success with total sales and commissions last year reaching over £135,000.

Drunk Driver four times the limit at 11am

Over 160 drivers, including a man who four times the legal limit at 11am, were arrested during Devon and Cornwall Police’s Christmas drink driving campaign.

According to figures released today police officers gave 1,326 breath tests of which 167 were positive, refused or failed to provide.

One man stopped in Devon was found to be more than four times the legal limit at 11am while another stop also in Devon found a 28-year-old woman four times the limit at 4:30pm/
