Young People challenge 'devastating' Youth Service cuts

Young People in Devon are campaigning against “devastating cuts” to the county’s youth services.

The cuts could see 60 jobs lost and council support and management withdrawn from the county’s 34 youth centres. Three weather warnings issued for South West

We in the South West haven't experienced the best weather so far this year, and unfortunately it looks set to continue for another week.

The Met Office have issued not one, but three weather warnings which are due to affect areas of the South West this week.

Today and tommorow we are set to experience strong winds and heavy rainfall, with the Met Office issuing a Yellow alert of wind.

These windy condtions mean the public need to be extra cautious and prepare for disruptions to travel.

Man rescued from flood water in Broadclyst

Appliances from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service were called to rescue a man who had become stuck in flood water today ( Tuesday 4th February).

The man had become stuck in floodwater whilst driving his vehicle in Broadclyst.

The Fire Service were called to the incident at 7.19 am today ( Tuesday 4th February).

One fire appliance from Middlemoor, one fire appliance from Danes Castle and a specialist water rescue team from Bridgwater were mobilised to this incident.

Making the internet a safer place

Schools and colleges in Teignbridge are being asked to join a campaign to make the internet safer for children and young people.

Teignbridge District Council and South Devon & Dartmoor Community Safety Partnership have invited all the secondary schools in the area to take part in Safer Internet Day on February 11th.

It is part of a national campaign being co-ordinated by the charity Childnet with the theme 'Let's create a better internet together'.

Flybe turnaround shows early sucess

Exeter airline Flybe will cut around 50 fewer jobs than initially expected as their business turnaround shows early signs of success.

The airline had initially proposed cutting 500 jobs as part of its turnaround plan revealed last November, but now says current cuts will be closer to 450.

Much of these savings have been made by cutting several unprofitable routes to remove the operating costs of the routes such as fuel and staff wages.

However this has incurred one off grounding costs of £14 million this year with a further one off costs of £26 milllion next year....

Police appeal to find Dawlish holiday park robbery suspect

Police are appealing for help in finding a man suspected of being involved in the robbery of a Dawlish holiday park last summer.

Dean Smart (pictured) is wanted in connection with a robbery at Golden Sands Holiday Park in Dawlish Warren in the early hours of 27 August.

Three other men have been arrested and charged in connection with the incident. They remain on remand in prison, awaiting trial.

Smart, 27, who is from the Bath area, is considered dangerous, and police believe he is actively evading capture.

South West tenants get worst value for money

Tenants in the South West of England feel they get the worst value for money from their rent than in other parts of the UK, according to a recent poll by the UK Association of Letting Agents (UKALA).

Just over half (57%) of tenants in the region rated their rent as ‘good’ or ‘very good’ when asked their opinion on whether it represented value for money. However, a third (33%) perceived their rent as ‘poor’ or ‘very poor’.

In comparison, the findings also show that tenants in Yorkshire and Humber derive the best value for money from their rent, with four in five (83%)...

The UK must make “difficult choices” between protecting towns or countryside from future flooding according to Environment Agency boss, Lord Smith.

Lord Smith argued that there was no “bottomless purse” for flood defences and that current guidance which gives priority to lives and homes “involves tricky issues of policy and priority: town or country, front rooms or farmland?”
