Ancient Rome Continues to Dictate the Plans of Exeter’s Grecians

Exeter is famed for its remarkably well-preserved collection of Ancient Roman architecture. The city continues to be surrounded by these historic works, and while they give Exeter a distinct feel and make it a huge attraction for visitors, it’s not uncommon for modernisation plans to run aground because of these sites.

Devon County Council partnership-working has been given an extra boost with the appointment of local Partnerships Superintendent Chris Eastwood. Supt. PCC Tony Hogg appoints new Chief Executive

Devon and Cornwall Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Hogg has appointed Andrew White as the new OPCC Chief Executive, subject to a confirmation hearing from his scrutiny body, the Police and Crime Panel. Mr White has been interim CEO at Mr Hogg's Exeter base since the departure of Sue Howl last year. He will take up the role with immediate effect. Post Easter start for Exmouth’s Premier Inn

Work on the new 60-bedroom Premier Inn on the former Elizabeth Hall site in Exmouth is scheduled to begin at the end of April.

Premier Inn is close to completing its final preparation work before starting work on site. It has concluded its negotiations with its chosen contractor and is working with East Devon District Council to fulfil the final requirements of the planning consent, before the start of construction.

Once on-site, the appointed contractors will complete the development quickly and to the highest standard, with an anticipated opening date of early 2015....

Plans for new heritage trust approved

Plans to transfer Devon’s heritage services to a newly formed charitable trust have been approved by the County Council’s cabinet today. The move will see the responsibility for storage, preservation and display of the county’s irreplaceable historical collections passed on to new heritage trust shared with Somerset County Council. The council says the move will protect the service from further rounds of budget cuts in the next two to three years which would otherwise see “public access and future development of the service severely affected”. Fire at Exeter College

Fire crews have been called to the Exeter College site today after reports of a vehicle fire.

The estates manager of Exeter College, Steve Strang said "An external vehicle came onto site in one of our loading bays and was discovered to have smoldering paper on board.

"Two applicances attended the scene to dampen down and we are now in the clearing up process. "There was no obvious cause and there was no immediate danger to our students staff or buildings.”

'Revenge eviction' fears in South West

Thousands of renters in the South West are too scared of being evicted to ask their private landlord to fix a problem in their home, according to research from the charity Shelter released today. A YouGov poll of more than 4,500 private renters across the country found that 1 in 12 renters (8%) in the South West avoided asking their landlord to repair a problem or improve conditions in the last year because they feared eviction. Up to £1,000 business rates relief in East Devon

Around 800 businesses across East Devon are set to benefit from a scheme that will give them rate relief of up to £1,000 for the next two years. The scheme, adopted by East Devon District Council, is designed to give local retail businesses of a rateable value of less than £50,000 a chance to compete on a more level playing field with internet retailers. Businesses to benefit include shops, post offices, restaurants, cafes, pubs and garden centres. Exeter’s HMS Defender to exercise Freedom of the City

Members of HMS Defender’s ship’s company will exercise their Freedom of the City of Exeter for the first time this weekend.

The state-of-the-art Type 45 destroyer is affiliated with the Devon city and has been enormously honoured to have Freedom conferred on her.

The 200 men and women who serve on board Defender will take part in a ceremony in the High Street, when the The Right Worshipful the Lord Mayor of Exeter, Councillor Rachel Lyons, will formally confer the Freedom of the City on the ship’s company.
