Pet store invests £225,000

Pets at Home has demonstrated its commitment to Exeter pet owners by investing more than £225,000 in renovating its store located on Exeter Retail Park.

Pet lovers in Exeter will now see a Vets4Pets veterinary surgery inside the store. The Vets4Pets surgery houses a full operating theatre, digital X-ray facilities, in-house laboratory and a hospital ward providing a full range of treatments from health checks to emergency operations.

Guildhall puts shoppers' health first

Exeter’s Guildhall Shopping Centre is making the city a safer place to shop with the help of the nation’s leading first aid charity.

The centre’s management team has purchased a portable Automated External Defibrillator (AEDs) – life saving equipment that can shock the heart to restart it after a cardiac arrest – from St John Ambulance.

And first aiders have been given training to ensure they can respond quickly in a life-threatening emergency.

A big-hearted zoo keeper at Paignton Zoo has gone ape for Ape-ril in aid of orang utan conservation. Head Keeper of Mammals Craig Gilchrist has had his beard dyed orange by his barbers – The Groom Room, in Abbey Road, Torquay - as part of Ape-ril, a campaign run by the Sumatran Orangutan Society.

Craig, who is co-chair of a national zoo primate group, was keen to take part: “I want to raise awareness and money. Sumatran orang utans share 96.4% of our DNA, but they are Critically Endangered and on the edge of extinction.”

Exeter students crowned 4x4 champions

A team of students from Clyst Vale Community College in Exeter have been crowned the national champions in Land Rover 4x4 in Schools Technology Challenge UK Finals, one of the UK’s most successful school STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) challenges.

Food handlers working in Exeter’s Chinese restaurants and takeaways are being offered the opportunity to gain a hygiene award when the Council runs a Cantonese and Mandarin training event next week.

Rare Bat Project wins Funding

Conservationists have been awarded funding to develop plans to protect a rare species of bat in Devon. The funding secured by Devon Wildlife Trust from the Heritage Lottery Fund for will go towards a project protecting the Greater Horseshoe Bat. Exeter Builder welcomes new Help to Buy scheme for military

An Exeter builder has welcomed the Government’s move to help military personnel lay down roots and own their own home through the new Forces Help to Buy scheme.

The initiative, which is due to be launched in early April, will initially cover a three-year period aimed at addressing the low rate of home ownership in the Armed Forces.
