Entries now open for the RSPCA’s Walk on the Wild Side challenge

Wildlife lovers are being invited to sign up for the RSPCA’s autumn active fundraising event ‘ Walk on the Wild Side ’.

The event invites participants across England and Wales to complete a walking challenge throughout October.

The fundraising challenge comes at a critical time for the charity as it reveals that last October (2024) was its busiest month for hedgehogs in the last five years*, and also marks the beginning of ‘seal pup season’ - when the RSPCA’s wildlife hospitals also typically see a spike in grey seals admitted as orphans, or struggling to feed and are...

Bicton College students and their four-legged friends are pleased to be moving to their new dog grooming centre on the East Budleigh campus this month.

Relocating from the current building to newly developed facilities as part of the new Animal Husbandry School means students studying animal care will now benefit from state-of-the-art equipment in the dedicated dog grooming centre.

Sidbury Community Enterprises bids to buy Red Lion, Sidbury & launches vision for pub

Since May 2013 a campaign has been underway to retain the Red Lion pub in Sidbury, East Devon. The pub was put up for sale last April by its owner, Punch Taverns.

In September the Red Lion was listed as an Asset of Community Value by East Devon District Council and as a result a moratorium on the sale of the pub to anyone, other than the campaigners, was introduced for 6 months. If the Red Lion is retained it will be the first community owned pub in East Devon.

Bike Blaze in Whipton

In the last few hours, fire crews have been called to put out a motorcycle fire in Whipton, Exeter.

The incident, which occurred at Summer Lane on Saturday evening, involved one vehicle being severely damaged in what is believed to be a deliberate attack.

One fire engine from Middlemoor station was sent out, and the crew extinguished flames using buckets of water. No injuries have been reported.

Following weeks of terrible weather and high rainfall there are many areas of Devon where people are suffering the consequences of flooding.

As the emergency services are gearing up to respond to another blast of bad weather which is predicted to make landfall in the Westcountry this weekend, there are many people displaced from their homes in need of immediate and longer term support.

Today Devon Community Foundation is launching its Devon Flood Fund appeal.

Train routes to Exeter blocked

The South West have experienced yet more damage due to stormy weather with Crewkerne being victim to a landslide.

The landslide, which was reported by Network Rail, means that popular routes in and out of Exeter ( including Exeter to Waterloo) are blocked.

Earlier in the week nearby town Dawlish was affected by the weather after waves destroyed the train line.

Bridgewater and Yeovil routes are also both currently blocked due to this weekend's landslide and continued bad weather.

Prepare for a windy evening

If you are braving the elements tonight ( Saturday 8th February) then prepare for some very windy weather.

The Met Office have issued an Amber weather warning of wind which is set to affect areas of the South West up until tommorow morning.

Severe gales may affect coastal districts, bringing gusts of 60-70 mph and isolated 80 mph at the most exposed locations within the Amber warning area. Large waves are also expected to affect southwest facing coasts. Further inland, gusts of 50-60 mph are likely.

Collision in Barnstaple results in casualty

A woman sustained minor injuries after being involved in a road traffic collision today ( Saturday 8th February) in Barnstaple.

The fire service were called to the incident at 3.33pm at Prixford Hill in Barnstaple.

Two fire appliances from Barnstaple were mobilised.

The collision involved two vehicles, however, all persons involved were free and clear of the vehicles upon the arrival of the Fire Service.

One female was treated with minor injuries by ambulance crew.

No other casualities were reported.

The South West is again being readied for a battering by the elements as high winds and heavy rain approach the region. Met Office warnings for heavy rain are in place prompting further flood fears as another 10mm-20mm of rain is expected to fall on already saturated ground. The Met Office has said: “The public should be prepared for disruption to transport and locally to power supplies, particularly when combined with the impacts of heavy rainfall.”
