Team members at the Wilko store in the Guildhall Shopping Centre, Exeter, are offering a helping hand to community groups and charities in the area who need extra support in 2014.

Whether the project benefits young people, families or the elderly, Wilko is appealing to anyone who is passionate about their local community to get involved and apply for a donation from the store’s Helping Hands budget.

Repairs begin on Topsham flood wall

Exeter City Council has begun repair work to the wall at Bowling Green Marsh, Topsham, using money from the government's funds.

The repairs come after a large section of the coastal defence alongside the River Clyst frontage was severely damaged during the high tides and storm damage in January and February.

This resulted in a breach which allowed the high tides to overtop and flow into the protected land and inkland road behind it. These raised defences provide protection to the RSPB reserve at Bowling Green Marsh and a number of nearby properties and businesses.

New study into Sidmouth to Feniton Trail

A major new study has been published looking at the possibility of developing a walking, cycling and riding route from Sidmouth to Feniton.

The concept of the 16km multi-use route, known informally as the Otter Trail, has been around for many years but has now been explored in more detail by the sustainable travel charity Sustrans. The study has follows a community meeting last year which highlighted the need for the report as part of the legacy work of the construction of Coleridge Bridge in Ottery St Mary, which opened to the public in August 2011. Football fever hit the Exeter Northcott Theatre last Sunday as rehearsals for the upcoming musical The Day We Played Brazil began.

Over 100 participants gathered at the theatre to begin rehearsing dialogue, songs and dance moves for the show that is set to be the biggest cultural event to hit Exeter.

The Day we Played Brazil will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the football match between Exeter City and the Brazil national team – the first-ever game played by Brazil. The play is based on the extraordinary true story of Exeter City FC’s tour to South America in 1914....

Fundraisers have smashed their target of raising £30,000 to help an Exeter mum who is the only person in the world with two rare terminal conditions.

Jo Smith (pictured, right) has a unique combination of diseases and doctors say the odds of suffering both is over five billion to one.

The 36-year-old suffers from pulmonary hypertension and lymphatic cancer. She is thought to be the first person in the world to suffer from these two different rare terminal diseases.

Public meetings are underway to discuss major changes to Devon’s children’s centres service as the county council prepare to cut £1.2 million from the service.

Heavy rain may disrupt travel

Surface water flooding may cause some travel disruption this afternoon as the Met Office issue a yellow weather warning for this afternoon (28 April).

Heavy, thundery downpours are expected to develop from 1pm bringing between 10-15mm of rain within an hour.

Some areas will see 30mm of rain over a longer period and may be enough to create minor travel disruption from surface water flooding.
