The proposal is a voluntary merger, with neither college in any form of intervention. By combining their resources and expertise, the Colleges aim to create a stronger, more resilient group with...

Motorcycle safety improving in Devon

Devon County Council’s support of motorcycle safety schemes is having a positive impact in reducing collisions involving bikers.

Last year, one biker died on Devon’s roads - the lowest number of biker deaths ever recorded in the county, and down from six in both 2012 and 2011.

However, the Council wants to continue that reduction and make the county even safer for motorcyclists.

It is currently backing an appeal by The Peninsula Trauma Network for old or unwanted motorcycle jackets, trousers or leathers. In an emergency, motorcycle clothing would often have to be...

Local projects in the South West will now receive additional funding from a £250m pot, with coming in addition to the £1.2bn already invested by central and local Government.

Work on to re-open the railway line could be completed earlier than expected, according to Network Rail. The work to repair the area of track destroyed during the recent heavy storms was initially expected to be completed by mid-March but was pushed back to mid-April after further storm damage frustrated repairs. However the Rail Minister, Steve Hammond, said the rail company had given a “commitment” that “if they can beat that target they will.” He continued: "Network Rail had a good weekend last weekend and they have had some 20-hour days." "They are also looking at the long-term options...

East Devon District Council has successfully defended its decision to refuse planning permission for a pig unit comprising two buildings, slurry store, attenuation pond and access track at Collyhead Farm, Venn Ottery.

In a decision announced today (Monday 24 February), Planning Inspector Pete Drew concludes that the proposed development “would harm the character and appearance of this designated landscape”.

The Council refused Mr Chris Down’s application (revision of 10/1954/MFUL) in September 2012.

Commenting on the outcome of an appeal by Mr Down, the Chairman of...

Campaigners against proposed cuts to Devon County Council’s youth service have said they are considering legal action as they believe the authority may have violated international law.

The dispute came to a head last Thursday when 17-year-old campaigner Alfie Weaver was denied a chance to address the council at a meeting to set the council’s budget for 2014/15.

The budget included a reduction of nearly £1m to the council’s youth service which could potentially see the closure of the council’s youth centres after the completion of a consultation process.

Warning issued over carpet cleaning scam

Devon and Somerset Trading Standards are warning residents today to be aware of unscrupulous traders offering carpet cleaning services, following complaints from concerned consumers.

The traders, some of whom operate nationally, normally make initial contact by telephone, offering to clean carpets for a low or special price, often around £20 per room.

A card then arrives with a date for when the work will be carried out.

However, Trading Standards officers say that this just 'a foot in the door', and once in the house, the trader will say that they have found...

Organic veg farm sends food aid to flooded farmers and villagers in Somerset

Farmers and villagers stranded on the Somerset Levels are eating a little better this week, thanks to food aid delivered in the form of organic vegboxes from Riverford.

The villages of Muchelney and Thorney have been cut off by floods for almost nine weeks, with water over a metre deep in places.

It’s too much for the Riverford vans to cope with, but thanks to a Unimog operated by Suffolk Fire & Rescue, regular deliveries of organic fruit and vegboxes are making it through.

Riverford’s founding farmer, Guy Watson says:P “The belief that good food should be...
