Dementia UK shares the signs and symptoms of dementia to look out for ahead of free clinics in Devon

Nationwide and Dementia UK’s free face-to-face clinics are returning to Nationwide’s Newton Abbot, Plymouth, Barnstaple and Exmouth, branches this September, offering specialist support in a safe, comfortable and private space for people to discuss any aspect of dementia.

Hosted by Dementia UK’s Admiral Nurses, the clinics are open to anyone impacted by dementia, offering life-changing support to families and individuals in the area. The clinics will take place throughout September, and appointments can be booked via Dementia UK’s website here .

Man charged for Church burglary

A 25-year-old man has been charged in connection with a burglary at Martin’s Church in Exminster shortly before Christmas. The church was broken into on 15 December 2013 and food was taken from the donation basket along with Christmas cards. An antique British Legion flag and kneeler were burned while damage was caused to storage cupboard locks and the sound system. Lewis Wilkinson, from Exminster, has been charged with burglary and criminal damage and remanded on bail to appear before Exeter Magistrates’ Court on 25 March 2014

Exeter School artists to exhibit work at ‘Before They Were Famous’ exhibition

The art work of seven Exeter School pupils has been chosen to appear in The Marle Gallery’s “Before They Were Famous” exhibition from 8 March to 5 April 2014.

Five current GCSE and A Level Art pupils and two former pupils have been given the opportunity to see their work hung in a professional gallery.

City Council to rebuild flood wall

A flood defence wall badly damaged by the recent floods in Topsham will be rebuilt by Exeter City Council after the Environment Agency would not commit to repairing it.

A large section of the wall by the River Exe at Bowling Green Marsh was damaged during the high tides and storm damage in January and February. The wall provides protection to the RSPB reserve at Bowling Green Marsh and a number of nearby properties and businesses. South West High streets are set to become ‘dementia friendly’ as several major retailers commit to offering their staff training to help those with the condition. The initiative launched by the Alzhiemer’s society will see staff at 60 Homebase and Argos stores as well as some branches of Marks and Spencer and Lloyds bank train to become ‘Dementia Friends’ who help people with dementia live more independently. Devon NHS wins wins award for Apprentices

A Devon NHS organisation has won an award for its work in promoting the recruitment of apprentices.

The Northern, Eastern and Western Devon Clinical Commissioning group (NEW Devon CCG) scooped the Education Training Skills (ETS) Large Employer of the Year Award at a ceremony at the Buckerell Lodge in Exeter on 4 March.

It was a double success for the NHS organisation on the night after Howard Stamp, acting safety systems officer with the nursing directorate, also won the ETS Apprentice of the Year for Outstanding Contribution Award.

Bridge demolition timelapse

The South Devon Link Road project team has released timelapse footage of some of the activity undertaken during recent engineering works.

The footage shows the removal of the old accommodation bridge, which was removed during the work over the Christmas holiday period.

Since the project began, timelapse footage has been gathered at locations along the 5.5 km route, and some of these cameras were temporarily relocated to capture the action during the Christmas works.

Exeter College celebrates 'Oustanding' from Ofsted

Exeter College students and staff are celebrating after being rated as outstanding by education inspectors. The college, which was also rated outstanding by Ofsted less than two years ago, has become the first college in Devon and Cornwall to reach the standard under a new ratings framework. Leading supermarkets and retailers have agreed to work with Devon and Cornwall’s Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Hogg as he prioritises the battle against alcohol related crime and misuse. Staff at Exeter’s John Lewis and Waitrose stores were delighted today after receiving an annual bonus worth 15% of their salaries - the equivalent to nearly 8 weeks of pay.
