Quality of road repairs improves

Road repairs by utility companies have shown a massive improvement over the past two years, following the publication of recommendations by Devon County Council.

A number of measures were put forward by the Council’s Place Scrutiny Committee Task Group in March 2012 to improve the quality of road repairs, which have to comply with a certain quality standard.

Exeter Probation Officers Strike Over "Dangerous" Government Changes

Probation Officers in Exeter will walk out on strike today against “dangerous” new changes introduced by the Ministry of Justice. The changes introduced by justice minister Chris Grayling will see around 70% of probation service work outsourced to private firms and volunteers in an effort to cut the costs of the service. The move has been criticised by the National Association of Probation Officers (NAPO) who argue that the changes are “dangerous” and will place the public at risk. Exeter based tax expert Helen Lewis has been named as one of four new partners by award-winning chartered accountants Francis Clark bringing the total partnership to 49. A gorilla is sending postcards back to Devon from the Antarctic. PEG – which stands for Polar Explorer Gorilla – is on board HMS Protector, the Royal Navy’s ice patrol vessel, on the adventure of a life-time. But why has a gorilla gone to the Antarctic?

Mothers are not always rewarded for helping their child

Parents are leaving themselves open to financial problems by lending their children money without any legal advice according to QualitySolicitors.com. Failed relationships and family fall outs are cited as factors that see many parents lose the money they have given their loved one.

Gas alarm results in late night evacuation

A gas detection alarm, which began sounding at 9.47pm last night, resulted in an Axminster property being evacuated and fire crews being called to the incident.

Firefighters immediately advised an evacuation when they recieved the report of the sounding alarm.

Two local appliances were mobilised to the incident with a gas detection monitor. Once in attendance crews had low level readings on the gas detector, and efforts were made to ventilate the property and to locate the source.

A positive pressure ventilation fan was used and the property made safe

Firefighters rescue woman trapped in vehicle

Firefighters were called to rescue a woman from her vehicle last night after she had become trapped following a collision.

Two appliances from North Tawton and Credition attended the incident which took place on the A3072 in Bow.

They arrived at 19.43pm and found the woman being treated by ambulance personnel.

The accident had left the woman trapped in her vehicle.

Crews used hydraulic rescue equipment and small tools to release the female from the vehicle.

Hundreds Expected at Badger March Today

Hundreds of protestors are expected to gather in Exeter this afternoon (Saturday) to oppose any extension of the badger cull into Devon, Cornwall and Dorset. Protesters will gather in Belmont Park before marching through the city centre and will welcome a range of speakers from several groups opposing the cull. Man charged after Exeter Bank Raid

A 39-year-old man has been charged with robbery following a bank robbery in Exeter city centre on Monday 24 March. Justin Bracken Lee, will appear at Exeter Magistrates' Court today, Friday, 28 March 2014.

Police are investigating the bank robbery which took place at around 1.10pm on Monday at the Natwest in Exeter City Centre.

Mr Bracken Lee is alleged to have told the cashier he was armed and demanded cash.

The male cashier was unharmed but shaken by the ordeal.

A large number of police remained in the area for several hours.
