The Hidden Strain of Dementia Support Systems

When people think about dementia, they often think about memory loss, diagnosis, or the practical aspects of care.

What is spoken about far less is the emotional toll of trying to navigate support systems, whilst also coping with the reality of someone you care about living with dementia.

Over the past few years, families have reached out to me for support during incredibly vulnerable times. In one situation, a family approached me specifically for guidance and advocacy.

Devon building group expands services

A Devon building group has acquired a firm that adapts buildings for people with limited mobility, in a move to expand its range of services and secure local jobs.

Exeter-based Lea James Investments, which includes Devon Minor Works and Steve Coomber Decorating, has bought Gozna Services for an undisclosed sum in a deal supported by Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking.

Gozna specialises in adapting homes and public buildings to make them easier to use by the elderly and disabled, including improving accessibility and customising bathrooms and kitchens.

Refunds for the cancelled final day of Devon County Show are now available on the organisers’ website. Organisers were forced to cancel the final day of the show on Saturday 24 May after mud and heavy rain raised significant health and safety concerns for visitors. Devon County Show Secretary, Ollie Allen said rain had turned the car parks into “quagmires” which saw organisers begin to turn away visitors from Friday afternoon. School joins tributes for young Exeter girl

An Exeter school has joined in paying tribute to the memory of a 12-year-old girl who died after falling from a wall at the Phoenix Youth centre in Burnthouse Lane. The girl, named as Nicole Hartup by police, is thought to have fallen from the wall whilst watching a football game with friends on Friday evening (23 May). Despite immediate care from Staff from the Youth centre and nearby sports centre, Nicole sadly died at Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital later that night. Two academics from Exeter University have been named as part of New Generation Thinkers 2014, a national scheme designed to turn ground-breaking ideas into fascinating broadcasting.

BBC Radio 3 and the Arts and Humanities Research Council’s (AHRC) confirmed today that Dr Daisy Hay, a lecturer in English, and Dr Alun Withey a medical historian have both been chosen to become academic broadcasters of the future.

Coach crash victims named

Two women who died in a coach in Cornwall have been named locally as Margaret Luxton and Carol Mundoon. The women died when the coach they were travelling in hit a wall on the A387 near Looe on Tuesday 13 May. 13 people were hospitalised by injuries received in the crash but have now been discharged. Others with minor injuries were assessed and treated by paramedics at the scene. The coach was hired for a trip organised by Exmouth Age Concern. Oak Furniture Land opening is a success

Exeter Chief’s famous mascot Big Chief….in the shape of a cake joined the Lord Mayor of Exeter to officially open the new Oak Furniture Land store on Exeter Retail Park on Saturday 24th May.

The life size cake of Big Chief’s head took centre stage as the Lord Mayor accepted the creation from the new Oak Furniture Land store.

Thousands stolen in Pinhoe bank raid

Police are investigating a Burglary which took place at Lloyds TSB bank at Pinhoe, Exeter over the weekend between Sunday evening and the early hours of Monday morning.

Officers were called by staff at 11.45am on Monday, 26th May and attended Lloyds Bank, Main Road.

Thieve(s) had entered the bank through the roof and stole a large quantity of cash, believed to be in the tens of thousands, from the cashpoint.

Housing drop-in sessions resume in Exmouth

Following concerns about the safety of East Devon District Council's Housing Service staff during drop-in sessions at Exmouth Town Hall, a review has now been held and the full service will be reinstated with effect from Thursday (29 May).

The sessions were suspended last week after a serious incident involving EDDC staff and a housing client. Appointment sessions were not affected.

Police appeal following death of young Exeter girl

Police are appealing for information following the death of 12-year-old Nicole Hartup who fell from a wall at an Exeter youth club on Friday night.

Emergency services were alerted around 8.50pm to a report of the young girl having fallen from an eight foot wall at the rear of the Phoenix Youth Club, off Burnthouse Lane, Exeter.

'Massive' reduction in Child arrests in Devon and Cornwall

The number of children arrested by Devon and Cornwall police has been cut by nearly 75% in the last five years according to a new report released today.

The report from the Howard League for Penal Reform, a national charity, says that the number of children arrested fell from 5,495 to 1,431 between 2008 and 2013.
