When people think about dementia, they often think about memory loss, diagnosis, or the practical aspects of care.

What is spoken about far less is the emotional toll of trying to navigate support systems, whilst also coping with the reality of someone you care about living with dementia.

Over the past few years, families have reached out to me for support during incredibly vulnerable times. In one situation, a family approached me specifically for guidance and advocacy.

The family of a ‘wonderful’ Exmouth grandmother killed in a coach crash in May have paid tribute to her memory.

Police have now confirmed that 59-year-old Margaret Luxton was killed when a coach she was a passenger in left the road and struck a wall near Looe in Cornwall on Tuesday May 13.

68-year-old Carol Muldoon, from Newton Poppleford also died in the crash while many other were left with serious injuries.

Man charged after alleged A30 stabbing

Police are appealing for witnesses to an alledged attempted murder on the A30 yesterday evening (June 2).

Officers were called to an area of the A30 near to Lewannick yesterday around 7.30pm after reports of a man injured by the carriageway. Officers found a man with a chest injury, believed to have been caused by a stab wound. The man, aged in his twenties, was airlifted to Derriford Hospital for treatment. His condition is described as stable and he has not suffered any life threatening or life changing injuries.

Help the ambulance service find you in an emergency

South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) has attended more than two million urgent and emergency calls in the last five years (2009 to 2013).

On 542 of these occasions the Trust has had the added challenge of finding the right address and location – these include the incorrect location being given by the caller, an error by the call-handler and satellite navigation problems.

This is not just a problem for SWASFT but a national issue for police, fire and ambulance.

Transport for Your Community is co-ordinating its first Community Transport Awareness Week across Devon from 9-15 June.

Police are appealing for the public’s help in finding a man who has gone missing from Exeter. Matthew Rogers, 25, went missing from his home in the St Thomas area of the city on Monday 26 May. He is described as white, 6ft 2ins, of slim build, with short fair-coloured hair. He usually wears jeans, a casual top and black boots. Ecover helps the South West Go Blue!

Events are taking place across Devon to mark Britain’s first ever Ecover Go Blue! weekend.

Almost 50 events have been organised across the country to celebrate our seas, shores and marine wildlife. Unexploded bomb found in Axminster

Update: The bomb disposal unit has made the device safe and the road has re-opened.

Six homes have been evacuted today after the discovery of an unexploded device in Axminster.

A Royal Navy bomb disposal team have been called to the scene after a 'historic German device' was discovered in a garden.

Police have set up a 20m cordon around the garden in Alexandra Road and evacuated homes in the surrounding area as a precaution .

Six properties were evacuated and the bomb disposal unit is on route to make the device safe....

Summer floods to become more frequent

Summer downpours and flash flooding are expected to become far more frequent across South England and Wales according to new research by the Exeter based Met Office and Newcastle University. The study, published in the Nature Climate Change, used a high-resolution model to predict the effects that climate change would have on UK’s summer floods. With Summer finally underway the Met Office has launched a brand new web page to help make the most of the holiday season. Sunday saw the official start of British Summer time. Summer in the meteorological calendar covers the duration of June, July and August, or by the astronomical calendar it begins around 21 June on a day referred to as the summer solstice.

Firefighters called to derelict church blaze

Firefighters spent over an hour at a church in Brookway, Whipton today after reports the derelict building was on fire.

Reports of the fire, at The Old Church, came in at 3.37am with two appliances from Middlemoor and Danes Castle being deployed to the scene.

Upon arrival crews immediately asked for two more fire fighting appliances and an aerial appliance to assist in extinguishing the fire which was well alight.

The incident is believed to be deliberate and not, as reported earlier, caused by the use of hot metal cutting equipment.
