RAFPA South West branch calls for new members

The South West Branch of the RAF Police Association are calling for new members.

They meet every two months at The Hunting Lodge near Ivybridge on the first Wednesday of alternate months at 11.30am. Meetings are followed by lunch.

The next meeting is taking place on Wednesday 4 June.

Several members also take part in the Cenotaph parade on Remembrance Sunday in London, joining several dozen others from all over the country, with one or two travelling across the pond. Members also attend parades, when their standard is carried, and always meet for Christmas lunch....

The Skin Angels visit Maynard School

The Skin Angels have recently visited Maynard school in Exeter, as part of their tour of schools and colleges in Devon.

Council streetlight scheme could put people at risk

The AA has warned that part night street lighting schemes plans like the one recently adopted in Exeter may be putting motorists at greater risk of accidents.

The breakdown recovery group claims that, while night time road accidents have fallen in recent years this fall is significantly less on unlit urban roads.

Overall, from 2007 to 2012, AA report a 19.6% reduction in road accidents along town and city roads where street lights were on shrank to 8.8% where drivers, cyclists, bikers and pedestrians travelled in darkness.

Teignbridge 20-year plan gets go ahead

A planning inspector has declared Teignbridge District Council’s 20-year Plan Teignbridge document for the future to be sound, and has given the go-ahead for it to be adopted by the council.

The Planning Inspectorate (PINS) issued its final report into the council’s plan yesterday which maps out how jobs, homes, including affordable, community facilities, roads, country parks, and more will be provided to meet local needs over the next 20 years.

In his report the Inspector said:

University of Exeter brings £600m to SW

The University of Exeter could be responsible for bringing more than £600 million to the South West’s economy each year according a new survey released by the university industry.

The survey conducted by Universities UK (UUK), an university industry body seeks to quantify the economic benefit universities bring to area by looking at the money generated by jobs and student spending.

The study claims that the total economic boost from the South West’s higher education institutions in 2011-12 was £1.7 billion, with £600 million coming from the University of Exeter alone....

51-year-old arrested after 12hr armed siege

Update: The man has been released from police custody into the care of mental health professionals.

Police will take no further action.

A 51-year-old man was arrested in Teignmouth this morning, following a 12 hour armed standoff with police.

Police were called to the house on Fourth Avenue at 13:45 after a man was reported to have locked himself in a house with a hammer and samurai sword.

Officers cordoned off the street and called for assistance from police negotiators...

Exeter Scientist's pioneers MRSA predictions

Scientists from universities in the South West have proposed a pioneering technique to help predict the severity of MRSA infection, which could lead to more personalised treatment for individual patients.

MRSA or meticillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus, is a type of bacterial infection that is resistant to a number of widely used antibiotics sometimes known as 'superbugs'. This means it can be more difficult to treat than other bacterial infections. Further update 7:30 - The road is now fully open in both directions

UPDATE - As of 5pm the ring road was closed between Countess Wear and the Tesco traffic lights as negotiators deal with the incident on Rydon Lane

Police have closed the A379 closed between Exeter and the Rydon Lane junction, because of concerns for a man spotted on the wrong side of the railway bridge.

Police were called to the scene at around 3:45pm after reports that the man was lying on the pavement.
