The Hidden Strain of Dementia Support Systems

When people think about dementia, they often think about memory loss, diagnosis or the practical aspects of care.

What is spoken about far less is the emotional toll of trying to navigate support systems whilst also coping with the reality of someone you care about living with dementia.

Grant approved for Topsham coastal defences

The Environment Agency (EA) has approved a grant to cover the costs of repairs to coastal defences in Topsham. The defences at Bowling Green Marsh, Topsham, were damaged by the storms in February this year and the repair has just been finished. A large section of the coastal defence alongside the River Clyst frontage was severely damaged during the high tides and storm damage in January and February. Devon and Cornwall Police have reiterated their warning to football fans to have fun, but drink responsibly during this summer’s FIFA World Cup. During previous football tournaments incidents of alcohol-related violence, including domestic abuse, have increased – particularly following England games. Alcohol plays a significant factor in these incidents and people may be drinking more alcohol whilst watching the World Cup matches. East Devon District Council’s Countryside team is offering a great opportunity to find out more about dragonflies later this month.

On Sunday, 29 June, Dave Smallshire, British Dragonfly Society Trustee and co-author of Britain’s Dragonflies, will be returning to the Axe Estuary Wetlands to lead a Wildlife Training Day.

Great South West Walks 2014 open for bookings

With 100 stunning coastal walks to choose from, the Great South West Walks 2014 is now open for bookings.

These specially selected circular walks by the South West Coast Path Association, will take place across Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and Dorset from 20-28 September.

Walkers can look forward to taking part in easy and family friendly strolls as well as challenging and rough terrain treks; many of the walks have themes such as history and wildlife, mining heritage, foraging, Jurassic geology and even a barefoot hike - each guided by an expert walk leader.

Youth service staffing numbers to halve

Every district in Devon will have a specialist youth centre hub with professional staff, following a decision by Devon County Council’s Cabinet yesterday (June 11).

The eight hubs will work with the most vulnerable young people, as well as providing three open sessions for all youngsters each week and expertise for community groups which want to set up their own sessions.

There will also be extra funding to assist communities to develop their own local youth offer using council buildings and other assets.

Broadclyst parish residents are being asked by East Devon District Council and Broadclyst Parish Council to decide how to spend £11,800 available for sports in the area.

The Broadclyst Parish Council area includes the areas of Westwood, Budlake, Westclyst, Broadclyst Station, Cranbrook, and Blackhorse.

The 15th annual Michelmores Charity Run attracted 800 runners, who competed in the 5K city centre course, starting in Cathedral Yard and finishing at Exeter Castle.

Started by polar explorer Ann Daniels, the men’s race was won by Gwylym Gibson with Ellie Sutcliffe the first women home. Ian Lynch and Karen Cook won the veterans competitions while Atass won the corporate event.
