The Hidden Strain of Dementia Support Systems

When people think about dementia, they often think about memory loss, diagnosis or the practical aspects of care.

What is spoken about far less is the emotional toll of trying to navigate support systems whilst also coping with the reality of someone you care about living with dementia.

Over the past few years, families have reached out to me for support during incredibly vulnerable times. In one situation, a family approached me specifically for guidance and advocacy.

In another, my role began as a companion and personal assistant to somebody living with...

Calling all Rolling Stones and Art Fans!

Currently touring across Europe, The Rolling Stones are as popular as ever - some 52 years on from playing their first gigs in London in 1962.

Guitarist Ronnie Wood, however, has two passions - music and art – and over the years he has been lucky enough to mix the two.

Martin Bell, Retail Manager of Devon Air Ambulance Trust said “We have been donated a limited edition framed giclee print of Ronnie Wood’s 'Rip This Joint' which embodies the power and energy of Mick Jagger and the group. To receive such a generous gift really does mean a great deal.”

He added “We’ve...

A very fishy donation to Devon Air Ambulance Trust

Devon Air Ambulance Trust (DAAT) regularly receives slightly unusual donations from the community but this week sees one of the most unusual. Heléna Holt explained “We received a call from Mat Mander, Deputy Chief Officer of the Devon & Severn Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority (D&SIFCA) recently, who advised they were making a donation of £792.38 to the Charity.” She added “This fantastic donation came from the sale of the mullet seized from an illegal net, found at the mouth of the River Erme in South Devon. This was as part of a joint operation between the D&SIFCA...

Exeter's Timepiece nightclub is open as usual despite a huge blaze at the nearby Hole In The Wall pub.

George Sloan, who owns both venues, told The Exeter Daily it would be business as usual at the popular nightspot.

Fire crews were called out to the Hole In The Wall at 4.21am on Friday June 20 but the blaze was so severe that 12 appliances were needed to tackle the flames.

George (pictured above) told us the situation was under control but he hadn't seen the full extent of the damage yet.

"It's devastating. We had put a lot of work into that building and...

When Philip Martin wanted a solution to testing fire alarms in hard to reach places, he soon put his finger on it.

The Community Safety Manager for Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue, had a moment of inspiration when he realised how difficult it was for some of the people he advised on fitting the devices to actually test them.

And so he came up with a simply but effective gadget called GOODPOINT - a long pole with a pointed finger on the end!

It is particularly suited for the elderly or vulnerable who are at greater risk. Every year falls are a major cause of...
