Devon Young Carers shine at the 2025 Young Carers Festival

Seventeen young carers from across Devon have enjoyed a well-deserved break from their caring responsibilities at the largest festival in the world dedicated to young people with unpaid caring roles.

It’s the 25th year that Devon Young Carers has attended the Young Carers Festival at YMCA Fairthorne Manor at Botley in Hampshire. Four dedicated staff members, one volunteer, and one inspiring Adult Young Carer accompanied them on a two-night adventure packed with connection, laughter, and discovery - a well-deserved break from their day-to-day caring roles at home.

Free kit 'Boxes' available near Honiton

Equipment for a wide range of activities is now available free of charge near Honiton following a successful bid by the town council. The bid for £12,500 funded a series of ‘boxes’ containing kit for a wide range of activities, such as the film-making and screening ‘box’, including items like camcorders, laptops, microphones, projector and tripods. Police seek man connected to alleged arson

Police in Barnstaple have released a picture of a man they would like to speak to in connection with an alleged arson attack at Fishleigh Rock Service Station, Umberleigh, north Devon, in the early hours of Monday 21 April. Police need help from the public to identify the man shown in CCTV footage in order to assist with ongoing enquiries. Anyone who knows the identity of the man pictured is asked call police on 101, quoting crime reference number CS/14/194, or alternatively contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Young writers are invited to get their creative juices flowing in a competition that could see their published story read by library users across Devon.

Devon County Council‘s library service has issued the challenge, welcoming stories of any length on the theme of ‘Mythical Creatures’.

Entries can be as written stories, picture or comic books, and there are two age group categories: 5 to 10 years, and 11 to 16 years.

Dartmoor cuckoo Whortle is home

One of the Dartmoor cuckoos which were tagged and tracked last year on the long journey to their African wintering grounds is now home.

The Dartmoor cuckoo project which began with the tagging of four Dartmoor birds last year is still waiting for Tor to return. It is thought that his tag's battery has now degraded so although it is likely that he is still alive, we may not be able to track him back to Dartmoor.

500 day countdown to Rugby World Cup

Exeter Chiefs players, school children and city representatives revealed a giant calendar at Sandy Park yesterday (Tuesday May 6) to mark 500 days to go to Rugby World Cup 2015.

The calendar revealed the date when tickets for all 48 matches, including three fixtures at Sandy Park, will go on sale to the general public: September 12, with the application window closing on September 29, 2014. A teenager from Tiverton, who overcame illness to ensure the future of her BMX team, has been named as the first-ever young winner of a new volunteering award by Prime Minister David Cameron. Sixteen-year-old Molly Pattison first got involved with Tiverton BMX Go-Ride club a couple of years ago and got stuck into racing. Sadly, at age 14, she was diagnosed with acute demyelination and was no longer able to ride her bike as her balance was affected. Okay for Croquet at A la Ronde

Visit A la Ronde for an informal afternoon learning all about the strategic game of croquet.

Members of the Sidmouth Croquet Club will be on hand to encourage and develop new skills with anyone who is keen to learn, as well as help improve the technique of existing players. Both newcomers and experienced players are welcome.

Living Coasts staff lead beach clean

Staff from Living Coasts, Torquay’s coastal zoo, are leading a clean-up of one of Torquay’s beaches.

Workers from the charity will join local volunteers to pick rubbish from Beacon Cove on the afternoon of Saturday 17th May.

A Devon conservation charity has launched a new Honorary Membership scheme to thank hard-working supporters.

The Whitley Wildlife Conservation Trust is the charity that runs Paignton Zoo, Living Coasts in Torquay and Newquay Zoo in Cornwall, as well as several nature reserves in Devon.
