Grand Western Canal celebrates 200 years

The Grand Western Canal is celebrating its bicentenary by hosting the IWA National Trailboat Festival. This annual boating festival belongs to the Inland Waterways Association, but is run by a different canal society or navigation authority somewhere in the UK each year.

The event features dozens of trailed boats, which are towed to the waterway and launched at a slipway. However, there is also a significant land-based element to the festival, including entertainment and refreshments, aimed at promoting the waterway and engaging local people.

Leading South West law firm, WBW Solicitors LLP has paid tribute to two respected solicitors who have recently left the business.

Catherine Strigner and Michael Martin, who have both had long careers with the firm, left at the end of April.

Carsharedevon.com is nearing 11,000 members following the latest drive to get more motorists to join the scheme.

More than 450 people signed up to the UK’s most successful car sharing scheme between January and March this year, bringing the scheme membership to just over 10,900.

Widow makes Exeter asbestos apppeal

A widow who lost her husband to an agressive asbestos-related cancer has asked for former workers at the Cowley Bridge Road Depot to come forward and share their memories.

Diane Allen, aged 59, widow of the late Bernard Allen (formerly Stone) is seeking help from former workers at Kneels Laundry Services, at Cowley Bridge Road Depot to come forward.

Helicopters move to Exeter Airport

Devon and Cornwall Police and Devon Air Ambulance Trust have this week relocated helicopter operations to a new shared airbase at Exeter Airport. The two aircraft have been moved from the former site at Police Headquarters, Middlemoor, following the sale of land for development. The helicopters will be housed at a secure location at the nearby airport which features a dedicated landing pad, hangar and purpose-built flight operations offices for both teams. Really Big Quiz raises record amount

Exeter’s 11th annual Really Big Quiz broke its fundraising record once again, raising an impressive £6,200 for the Lord Mayor of Exeter’s charity, Ataxia UK – which funds research into a group of neurological disorders that affect balance, co-ordination and speech.

Organised by chartered accountancy firm Simpkins Edwards, the quiz took place at the Corn Exchange in Exeter on Wednesday 7 May. The hall was packed with 70 teams representing local firms, all eager to win the title of Exeter’s brainiest business.

PM criticises 'unfair' BBC decision

The Prime Minister, David Cameron, has become the latest public figure to criticise the BBC over its dismissal of a Veteran DJ for broadcasting a song containing racist language.

Commenting on ITV’s Good Morning Britain, David Cameron said that the BBC had acted “unfairly” in its treatment of the BBC Radio Devon DJ David Lowe who was dismissed after broadcasting a 1932 recording of ‘The Sun Has Got His Hat On’.

Police name Exeter manslaughter victim

A 27-year-old man who died following an assault on Saturday night has been named by Police as Exeter man Joseph Wake.

Earlier today two men from Exeter were charged with manslaughter in connection to Mr Wake's death

Craig Melhuish, aged 38, and Colin Smith, aged 34, have both been charged with manslaughter and were due to appear at Exeter Magistrates Court this morning (12 May).

Two others a 34 year-old woman from Exeter and a 41 year-old man, also from Exeter have both been released on police bail until August.

Christmas comes early in Axminster!

East Devon District Council has listened to traders in Axminster and is proposing to launch a special car parking rate in all its pay and display car parks in the town – starting this month.
