The Hidden Strain of Dementia Support Systems

When people think about dementia, they often think about memory loss, diagnosis, or the practical aspects of care.

What is spoken about far less is the emotional toll of trying to navigate support systems, whilst also coping with the reality of someone you care about living with dementia.

Over the past few years, families have reached out to me for support during incredibly vulnerable times. In one situation, a family approached me specifically for guidance and advocacy.

Road users are being urged to take extra care from tonight (Wednesday) through to Thursday afternoon after the Met Office issued an Amber ‘risk to life’ warning, forecasting high winds and rain across the county.

Storm Ciaran is landing in Devon with strong winds expected from this evening and peaking between 3am Thursday morning and at least lunchtime that day, with the clean up likley to last for some time after that.

Rain of up to 40mm, (80mm on Dartmoor) on already sodden ground, is expected across Devon, while winds of between 60 and 75 mph predicted.

Support available to flood-hit communities through grant scheme

Communities hit by flash floods in September are being encouraged to approach the Devon Community Resilience Forum if they need support.

The forum has extended its Emergency Resilience Grant scheme until next April so that Devon communities affected by flash flooding on Sunday 17 September can seek help if needed.

The initiative offers two funding schemes: - Help for communities to develop emergency plans, and - Support for small scale works and resilience equipment, which is usually intended for those communities with an emergency plan already in place.

Devon County Council is gearing up for Storm Ciaran, which is forecast to reach the UK this Wednesday night into Thursday.

The worst of the storm is expected to track the English Channel, but with the Met Office predicting heavy rain and strong winds, Storm Ciaran's impact is likely to be felt across Devon and Cornwall.

Snark is now fully open at her berth at Piazza Terracina. The first three weeks have been a great success with over 100 happy diners enjoying our Moorish set dinners and brunches.

For the next two weeks they head to Italy with a four course warming autumnal menu of classic Italian dishes; preserved meats and vegetables, rich pastas, hearty stews and luscious deserts. Mellow Italian wines and English ale sold over the bar.

Alphington Blazers Live Footballing Dream

Members of a boys junior football team enjoyed a taste of life as a professional footballer after winning a training session with the management team of Exeter City – thanks to one of the UK’s leading builders merchants.

Residents of Millbrook, a later living community in Devon, came together to host a Macmillan Coffee Morning. Residents helped to raise an impressive £2000 for Macmillan Cancer Support as part of coffee mornings held at Inspired Villages retirement communities across the UK.
