Late night lightning strike leaves Devon home on fire

A lightning strike that occured during the early hours of Saturday morning (7 June) caused the roof of a South Molton property to become on fire.

Firefighters from South Molton, Barnstaple and Chulmleigh, attended the North Road incident at 4.31am.

Upon arrival, fire crews requested a fourth fire appliance from Barnstaple as well as the incident command vehicle and a supporting fire appliance from Ilfracombe.

The British Red Cross Fire and Emergency Support Services team were also mobilised.

To commemorate the 70th anniversary of D-Day the Exeter-based Met Office has released a series of videos detailing the part paid by forecasters in the planning of the landings on June 6 1944. The videos pay tribute to role that Met Office forecasters had in helping with preparations for the invasion fleet. Exeter Airport: D-Day 70 years on

The airport at Exeter had always been intended for use by the military in the event of war, and in 1939 the airport was taken over by the Air Ministry. Three asphalt runways were laid and RAF Station Exeter became officially operational on 6 July 1940.

RAF Hurricane squadrons had protected the Channel ports but in April 1944 the RAF units were withdrawn and the airfield was taken over by the US 9th Air Force. Killerton awarded £10k For King and Country

The National Trust has been awarded £10,000 by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for a project, For King and Country at Killerton, near Exeter.

Awarded through HLF’s First World War: Then and Bow programme, the project will focus on the creation of a site-specific performance and art installation.

To be staged on Thursday 12 and Friday 13 June at 1pm and 4pm the performance tells the story of the impact of the First World War on the people at Killerton and the surrounding estate.

£3,450 up for grabs for sports provision

East Budleigh and Bicton Parish residents are being asked to decide how to spend £3,450 available for sports in the area.

East Budleigh with Bicton Parish Council and East Devon District Council are taking their voting stall to the Scarecrow Festival at East Budleigh Village Hall on Saturday 14 June between 11am and 3pm. Go along and cast your vote!

The money has all come from recent housing developments (Section 106 money) in the parish. It is now up to residents to decide how the money is used.

Jewellery worth £5,000 stolen in burglary

Police in north Devon are appealing for information after £5,000 worth of jewellery was stolen during a burglary at an elderly woman’s South Molton home.

The woman in her 80s, discovered her house had been burgled after returning from a holiday visiting family in Australia.

More than 20 items (pictured), including a wedding ring and eternity ring, were taken from the house in North Road sometime between the early hours of Sunday 30 March and 7pm on Sunday 1 June.

It is believed the offender(s) entered the property by removing a glass panel on the locked front door....

Students from University of Exeter are taking part in a day of action today in order to protest against controversial cuts they believe could “disproportionally impact” students with disabilities. Exeter students are joining with students from universities across England to protest as part of a national campaign led by the National Union of Students (NUS) against cuts to the Disabled Students Allowance (DSA). Five young people arrested after Brixham fire

Five young people have been arrested in connection to a major fire at a disused Pontins holiday park in Brixham last night.

The fire was started yesterday afternoon and resulted in substancial damage to part of the property on Wall Park Road.

Emergency services attended the fire just before 5pm on following numerous reports from the public that there was large blaze and heavy smoke.

Two Fire crews initally attended the scene but the rapid spread of the fire meant they quickly called for backup from more crews.

Paignton Zoo is looking for a new gorilla – because their old one has been worn out by too much cuddling!

The large plush toy gorilla in the charity’s entrance hall has become the Zoo’s unofficial mascot, greeting visitors with her laid back attitude and laconic smile. Over the years, thousands of children and grown-ups have had their photo taken with her and her orang utan friend.

The annual Tiverton Balloon and Music Festival has confirmed that it will be returning this summer for the fourth consecutive year
