Job prospects in the South West are the best in the country, with an employment outlook of +15% this quarter, according to Manpower, the global leader in contingent and permanent recruitment workforce solutions. This is a significant increase on last quarter’s Outlook of +10%, and the highest in the region for over three years.

Teignbridge receives sports funding boost

People living in an area of Teignmouth will benefit from a new and exciting health and fitness project thanks to £142,500 of National Lottery funding from Sport England’s Community Sport Activation Fund.

Teignbridge District Council is among 88 projects to receive a share of £15 million of funding to support grassroots sport activity across the country.

Police in Devon and Cornwall now have new powers to help victims of domestic violence and abuse.

Where a perpetrator has been violent, or threatened violence, towards a victim or their children and there are unlikely to be any substantive criminal charges the police may authorise a Domestic Violence Protection Notice whilst the perpetrator is in custody.

Membership of the Green Party is growing rapidly in the South West. Figures from the regional Party reveal a 25% increase in the first five months of this year with 13% increase in May alone.

Greens say membership is likely to continue to soar in the wake of the election of Molly Scott Cato to the European Parliament, the first Green MEP for the South West.

Chance for Devon producers to showcase wares

As part of its 200 year anniversary celebrations, Finch Foundry in Sticklepath, near Okehampton, is hosting a local produce fair in the garden on Saturday 21 June.

Exeter Drama Company turns 60

The Exeter Drama Company, which began back in 1954, is celebrating its 60th birthday and its first play of the Jubliee Season with a party to take place at Alphington Primary School.

It’s all about the birds and the bees at Paignton Zoo right now.

Three Ural owl chicks can be seen in the Forest area of the Zoo. And a colony of Cornish black bees has been installed in a new public viewing hive.

The bee hive is part of a Heritage Lottery Fund project run by B4 - Bringing Back Black Bees, a Cornish conservation organisation working to promote the qualities of the native black honey bee Apis mellifera mellifera.

Staff and volunteers at Knightshayes near Tiverton are currently researching the role the National Trust property played during the First World War.

Their research will form the basis of an exhibition they’re hoping to hold from mid-July to November next year to mark the 100 year anniversary of the War and the team are keen to hear from anyone who might hold any information that might help them with their project.

A local conservation charity is marking Volunteers’ Week by highlighting some of the many ways in which its dedicated volunteers contribute.

The Whitley Wildlife Conservation Trust runs Paignton Zoo, Living Coasts in Torquay and Newquay Zoo in Cornwall, as well as nature reserves in Devon.
