71st Bishop of Exeter installed

The 71st Bishop of Exeter, the Rt Rev Robert Atwell, was installed at Exeter Cathedral on Saturday.

He was processed down the High Street by children representing Devon’s 131 church schools, a group from the Young Farmers Association, and the Barnstaple Youth Marching Band.

He paused at the Great West Doors of the Cathedral to pray, marking the end of the ‘prayer pilgrimage’ he has taken around the county in previous weeks, before knocking three times with his staff on the door.

He was welcomed in by pupils from St Luke's School in Exeter.

He said he was a "...

A five-day old spectacled eider duckling exchanges a glance with zoo keeper Sarah Tingvoll at Living Coasts in Torquay.

Spectacled eiders are rarely seen in zoos - Torquay’s coastal zoo and aquarium is one of only five public collections in Europe to house them. Only one other zoo in Europe has bred them in the last twelve months. But clearly these ducks have taken to the English Riviera.

Living Coasts’ Clare Rugg explained: “They are hard to keep because they have very particular needs, including a large salt water pool for swimming and displaying and thick vegetation in...

Survey reveals striking attitudes to sport

There has been a wealth of sport on the TV this weekend with the Wimbledon Finals, World Cup quarter finals and the British Grand Prix, but for many of us it’s as close as we come to taking any form of exercise.

In a YouGov survey commissioned by The Salvation Army, 77 per cent of respondents in the South West of England said they watch sport on the TV, but 47 per cent admitted that they exercise less than once a week, and 28 per cent said that they never do any exercise or sports at all. Nevertheless, a whopping 84 per cent of adults in the South West who took part in the...

How you can help wildlife this summer

The weather is heating up and as we don our straw hats and paste on the sun cream, our garden friends may need a little helping hand to survive the sizzle.

Hot weather can place wildlife under stress. The yellow stems of dry grasses provide fewer calories to grazing animals. The heads of wildflowers go over the top more rapidly denying nectar-seeking insects a food source. Worms bury themselves deep in the soil, beyond the reach of birds. Oxygen levels in rivers and streams drop as their levels fall. These and many other side-effects of the sizzling weather can have a harmful...
