Four rowers from three generations set to row 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean for charity

Four rowers from three generations are preparing to take on the challenge of a lifetime this December — rowing across the Atlantic Ocean as part of the World’s Toughest Row.

Team “Give Us A Wave” will set off from La Gomera, in the Canary Islands and row 3,000 miles to Antigua in the Caribbean.

They will row in pairs, two hours on, two hours off for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, facing 40-foot waves, scorching heat, exhaustion, salt sores, isolation and total self-sufficiency at sea – all while on their boat Oardrey which is just under nine metres long.

Police launch fraud investigation over fundraising page

Devon and Cornwall Police have confirmed they are investigating an allegation of fraud after receiving reports from the public about an account on website "gofundme.com".

The account was supposedly set up in remembrance of 12-year-old Nicole Hartup, who died after falling from a wall at the Phoenix Youth Centre in Wonford in May.

However, members of the public believe the funds are being kept by the individual who set up the account.

A spokesperson from Devon and Cornwall Police said: "I can confirm we are investigating an account on the gofundme.com website...

Entries for the Devon & Cornwall Police Partnership Community Volunteer Awards 2014 close on Friday, 11 July.

The awards will reward and recognise those who give their time to support local neighbourhoods to build strong and cohesive communities.

The awards are supported by PCC Tony Hogg, the police, Devon and Cornwall Community Watch Association and Crimestoppers.

Neil Parish MP showed his support for a campaign led by the charity Guide Dogs to make travelling by bus easier for people with sight loss.

People are being asked to have their say on proposals to extend the principles of licensing for houses of multiple occupation (HMOs) not already covered by the current scheme.

Exeter City Council wants to broaden its licensing to cover rented properties in buildings which have been poorly converted into self-contained flats or flats in multiple occupation above shops and businesses.

Devon County Council has welcomed today’s (Monday 7 July) Growth Deal announcement by the Government as a good deal for Devon’s economy.

The Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership has secured £130.3 million from the Government’s Local Growth Fund to support economic growth in the area to 2021.

Man charged with murder of teenager

A man has been charged with the murder of 17-year-old Alex Peguero Sosa in Kingsbridge on Sunday.

Lee Andrew Dent, 42, of East Portlemouth near Salcombe, remains in police custody and is due to appear before Torquay Magistrates’ Court today (Tuesday 8 July).

Alex, from the Kingsbridge area, was found with injuries in Prince of Wales Road around 2.20am on Sunday 6 July.

He was taken to Derriford Hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.

Hole in the Wall owners inundated with offers of help

The owners of an Exeter pub severely damaged in a blaze have been inundated with offers help from business contacts, friends and customers.

George Sloan and his business partner Rob Skinner have spent the last two weeks over seeing a massive clean-up operation.

But they said they had been touched by the amount of support and encouragement they have received, sometimes from complete strangers.

Residents invited to speak at open forum

People in Exeter are being given the chance to quiz councillors on any “burning” issues for the city.

Exeter residents are invited to put forward questions to members of the joint County and City Councils' Exeter Board, at their next meeting on 17 July at 6pm in the Civic Centre.

The Board allocates 15 minutes for their ‘open forum’, with three minutes per speaker, with a maximum of three to four speakers to allow time for discussion.

Previously, residents have prompted debate about issues including street lighting, homelessness and waste collection.
