Four rowers from three generations set to row 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean for charity

Four rowers from three generations are preparing to take on the challenge of a lifetime this December — rowing across the Atlantic Ocean as part of the World’s Toughest Row.

Team “Give Us A Wave” will set off from La Gomera, in the Canary Islands and row 3,000 miles to Antigua in the Caribbean.

They will row in pairs, two hours on, two hours off for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, facing 40-foot waves, scorching heat, exhaustion, salt sores, isolation and total self-sufficiency at sea – all while on their boat Oardrey which is just under nine metres long.

Free tasters at Haven Banks Outdoor Centre

It's 40 years since Haven Banks Outdoor Education Centre opened and one year since they moved into their new purpose built facility on Exeter’s historic canal and quayside.

In that time thousands of people from across Exeter and the South West have enjoyed an outdoor activity from kayaking to caving with the centre.

To celebrate their birthday on Sunday 13 July Haven Banks is offering free outdoor activity taster sessions as part of the Sport and Well-being Fun Day organised by Active Devon on Exeter Quay.

Appeal after vehicles damaged in Chudleigh

Police are appealing for the public’s help in identifying a man after a number of vehicles were damaged in Rock Road, Chudleigh.

Six scrap vehicles were spray painted and their windows were smashed with a claw hammer at around 4.30pm on Monday 16 June.

Officers would like to speak to the man (pictured) in connection with the incident. He is described as in his early 20s, around 6ft tall and was wearing a white t-shirt.

Police are also keen to trace a woman who was seen with the man in the area at the time.

She is believed to be aged between 19 and 21, around...

Transition Exeter to run Skill Sharing Day

Transition Exeter is running a Skill Sharing Day on 19th July, offering a chance to learn new and old money-saving skills free of charge. Jam and bread-making, bicycle maintenance and repair, knitting and quilting, spinning and weaving are all on the menu, as well as teas, coffee and cakes available all morning. There will be help on hand for people to alter pre-loved clothes to fit themselves, or to look more stylish, and a bike mending expert; so bring your bikes along if they need repairing or maintaining.

Lottery success for Exeter CAB

Local Charity, Exeter Citizens Advice Bureau, is celebrating a lottery award of £9,500 from the Big Lottery Fund.

The charity will use the lottery grant funding when they move into more prominent city centre premises in Dix’s Field. The grant will enable clients to ‘do it online’. The grant will be used to fund improved IT and telephone facilities for clients, office furniture, room security and volunteer expenses.

Exeter police crack down on speeding

As part of an ongoing road safety operation, police officers from Exeter have carried out a number of speed checks on Exeter Road, Topsham. The operation was in response to concerns raised by local residents as to the speed of vehicles travelling in the 30mph limit.

Nearly 30-drivers were stopped between 9am and 1pm for exceeding the speed limit.

The highest recorded speed of the vehicles stopped was 54mph. Ten on-the-spot fixed penalty tickets were issued and all stopped drivers were asked to view a road safety awareness video developed by the Fire service. The video...

Judges from the Royal Horticultural Society have started assessing Exeter's bid to win Britain in Bloom South West.

After an absence of over ten years, Exeter is taking part in this year’s prestigious competition. Judging in Exeter started this morning (Tuesday 8 July) before the results are announced in Trowbridge on 18 September.

Over 2,600 two year-olds in Devon are either now entitled to, or will be from September, up to 15 hours of free Early Learning and Childcare per week.

This is roughly 35% of the County’s 2 year-old children who can benefit from the opportunity to make new friends, learn through play and have lots of fun at one of around 430 of our high quality specially approved childcare settings.

Those childcare providers include day nurseries, pre-schools, child-minders and school nurseries.

Exeter Bus & Coach Station celebrates 50 years

Hundreds of locals and vehicle enthusiasts gathered to the Exeter Bus & Coach Station on Saturday to mark the company's 50th anniversary and to raise money for a good cause.

Over 40 vehicles, past and present, were showcased at the event.

Members of the public were also treated to free heritage bus rides around the city and free rides through the bus wash to celebrate the milestone.
